Real or Reflection?

Real or Reflection

Normal or reflection of normal

in our changing world

*

Reality

skewed makes many question

what is real and what is just a reflection;

*

Reflections of wishful thinking and deceit

bombard us with every click of the key

with every click of the channel

*

What was once foundational

now undermined

becoming the skeptics challenge

making one wonder

“What is Truth?”

Stunned Bird

The grease imprint of a dove that hit my window…

Birds fly into my window from time to time crashing into a sky of glass and an image of illusion. Stunned they fall to the ground or circle back to the trees, only to do it over again on another sunny day. Being territorial they are trying to attack the illusion of another bird intruding into their territory, and only hurt themselves in the process.

Seems we are seeing this play out today in DC, as our Lame-Duck President continually tries to incite followers to attack the illusion of an intruder stealing his space. Over and over he keeps hitting the glass sky and is now looking like that stunned bird that hit my window.

Protesters gather

Attacking an illusion

Stunned bird thinks he won

*********

This is a stunned finch that hit my window. You can see the twisted claw. He eventually was able to fly away.

Divide and Conquer

EER_0158 (2)

The communist leader, Khrushchev once said

We will destroy America, not with guns and missiles,

we will destroy America (with a revolution) from within!”

Little did he know the effects of future social media.

His prophesy seems to be coming true as we grow apart.

Divide and conquer // a long held strategy, seems to work;

Who needs guns and missiles when we do it to ourselves?

Perhaps it is time to lay down our tongues of war

Our hateful politics, our social judgments, our racial biases

and our Holier than thou Religion.

Time to quit feeding on only what is being fed to us by

our enemies on social media and the News talking heads.

We are in a war for our lives, both physically and politically.

We have spent the last twenty plus years refusing to co-operate;

Being fed misinformation and devouring twisted truth.

Maybe it really is time to sing Kum Ba Ya together…

To listen to one another // to learn to compromise

and in my own naïve way, believe it can happen…

Before it is too late!

Merril at d’Verse, has has asked us to write about revolution,  This poem goes to back to a time when the Cold War with Russia was at it’s peak. Long before many of our younger blogers were born, the Russians were in the business of revolution. They suceeded in Cuba and were ready to plant missles there until JFK gave them an ultimatum. The desire to cause revolution in this country is very real and is being fed by our social media every day. It is time to use common sense and quite being manipulated by what we feed on.

Truth or Fools Gold?

IMG_0617 (2)
Finding truth in today’s world
is like panning for gold.
We gather our pan full of sand
our minds swirling around;
Washing out the stones and gravel
sifting through bits of silt.
Hoping to find a glint of truth
in the bottom of it all.
Sometimes // we find a speck
here and there;
Other times, all we end up with
is fools gold!

Smoke Screens and Mirrors

EER_0269 (2)

With the Impeachment hearings going full throttle, it seems everyone parrots  an opinion. It once again brings to mind a poem I wrote during the last election campaign. As the political circus plays out on TV, nothing is ever as it seems.  Our representative share with us on a need to know basis, and the news media shares on an everything you don’t want to know and more basis. I will be glad when this reality TV “Survivor” show runs its course, and congressional parrots go back in their cage to work at getting things done for the American people.

Politics
A circus of smoke and mirrors
Half-truths polished and shiny
Stretching every word out of context
Smoke screens of the insignificant
Always hiding reality
Behind a cover of lies
Showing only fragments
Promising pots of gold
At the end of the rainbow
False hope in a holey bucket
Filled with wishes and fantasies
Pouring steadily out the bottom
Mirrors in a TV funhouse of fright
Giving only distorted views
Twisting everything out of proportion
Don’t believe the hype
Look beyond the smoke and mirrors
Dig out the shreds of truth
Always remember
What you see is NOT what you will get

Superiority & Prejudice

EER_0579 (2)

Superiority is the greatest enabler of prejudice!
Downfall of all of us, it seems // from the Garden to now
Outthinking God // we believe our own truth
About life // about others // about faith
Encapsulating God in our own image
Superiority seems to bring out the worst in people
Evolves equally in both rich and poor
Entitlement blinds the moral compass
Making North South and East West
Seduces the good // enrages the oppressed
Superiority evolves from the Id and builds the Ego
Falsely filling our minds with our own fake news
Selfish desires rise above right and wrong
Elevating race and color above common sense
Claiming ideology and theology to be the basis for greater truth
Superiority is the greatest enabler of prejudice

Our Narrow Perspective

EER_0697 (2)

Blinders…
Amish buggy clopping down the road
Horse looking straight ahead pulling her load
Not seeing side to side // distractions might scare
Blinders shading each eye // make her unaware.
On down the road and into the barn
Knows her place // she always goes home
*
Just like us clopping down the road
Choosing our blinders pulling our load;
Refusing to see what’s all around us.
Distractions might scare us // the news might blind us
Tell us we might be wrong // or twist our thinking
With all our choices, it could drive us to drinking
*
As long as we can see straight ahead
We stay on course knowing we’re lead…
Down the road of our personal choosing;
We forge ahead even though we’re losing.
Unlike the horse, who must wear her blinders
We choose to ignore reality’s reminders

With the new election year coming up, I thought this little rerun jab might wake us up!

Speculation

News-Media-Logos

My wife accused me of repeating myself every time I watch a news broadcast.  I keep hearing them talk over and over again about “what they don’t know.” To me this means they are making it up as they go along. In the age of 24 Hour News and TV Tabloids, a  lot is left for speculation and truth. This poem expresses my feelings about the Fake News of the day. See what you think!?

When the news anchor begins with…

“What we don’t know is…”

I know we are in trouble

Made up stories of speculative imagination

Conjured up // supporting a biased point of view

Not based on facts or real evidence

But rather…On “What we don’t know is…”

It is not hard to see why many tune out…

When news of the day is simply “educated gossip.”

Why not just stick to the facts of the day

Let the listener do the speculation and deduction

News used to be about what happened

Now it is about, “How do you feel about what happened”

With demands for admission of guilt…

Tried by the media in the court of public opinion

Followed by firings….

Followed by apologies…   Some accepted and some denied.

Is the world worse than it used to be?

Perhaps, but I believe it appears that way

Because now we see everything that goes on

Often in real time captured on smart phones

Instead of seeing our junk that happens

We see everyone else’s bad news

Exponential crime and debauchery day after day

Is it no wonder that such negative attitudes prevail?

Good new is often relegated to the last 60seconds of the newscast

Sort of like getting a lollipop at the dentist

After he has done a root canal on you

If you still listen to the news, ask yourself…

Am I hearing the facts or “What they don’t know?”

When “What we don’t know is…” becomes the truth of the day

We are all in trouble … it really is fake news!!

News Politics and Truth

Three blind men and and elephant

Perhaps the truth you choose to believe
Depends on which side of the Elephant you stand
Some at the head and get whipped around by the trunk
Those who are left stand at the rear constantly shoveling
Those on the side see a vast nearsighted nothingness
But // beware of the feet //for they will stomp you flat
In the everchanging tide of strong divisive opinion
It is sometimes hard to tell left from right
Truth seems to be whatever we make it to be
This is nothing new // we’re always in a stew
A few short years ago it all depended on
Which side of the Donkey you stood on on
With very similar results
Only shoveled from those who were right.
We’re reminded daily of fake news being spread
So // how does one know truth from fiction // gossip from facts
The answer is in no way clear
For me it all seems to be a lot of ES…DS…and BS … and now TS
I don’t think social media is a friend of our society
Its aim is to distort, divide, keep us in fractured turmoil
For me // give me a ten-page newspaper with comics in the back
A Look or Life magazine with mostly photos and a few facts
Filter out the most important things and let the rest go
Let those in charge do their job // if not the next vote will show
There’s a world of mess out there that I don’t need to know
