Matter & Consciousness

M3391M-1012

Running barefoot in the stream of consciousness
I bang my toes on all sorts of matter
It got me to thinking
“What came first… matter or consciousness?”
Solids, liquids, gasses,
or the conscious presence of the Spirit
When it comes to you and me
it seems pretty easy to decide;
Consciousness enters at conception
and departs at death…
dust to dust and ashes to ashes
and the spirit goes back
to God who gave it.
All we are is inert matter without consciousness
Just dust and bones
Life/living is a stream of consciousness
Amazing how fast our matter turns back to dust
without the flow of the Spirit within us.
When it comes to the universe
consciousness seems to be the guide
behind all that happens to matter.
Patterns, organization, gravity, magnetism
Keeping everything in sync;
Consciousness before life…
consciousness during life…
consciousness after life…
We are all part of the flow
of the spirit of the universe

Bag Lady Facelift

The bag lady’s having a facial

Without warm mud or hot oil

It’s with hammer and nails

Hitting her finger she wails

But don’t worry, it all superficial

Surreal Dreams

EER_0301 (2)

The tragic death of basketball star Kobe Bryant, his daughter, along with seven others in a helicopter crash once again reminds all of us that ,”life is but a dream!” It can be taken from us in an instant. It is so sad when lives are taken in their prime. For those left behind it must all seem like a bad dream.

Sudden death brings shock
Like living a dream too surreal
Never forgotten
Their spirit’s always with us
A deep sadness lies within

At d’verse Lillian asked to write a poem about dreams. There are many kinds of dreams. I chose to reflect on the events of this week, and the lives lost in California.

Feral Cats

EER_0272 (3)

The people have long gone. The house is falling down, but not empty. A group of feral cats moved in to make themselves at home. I saw this old house when I went back to visit my home town a couple of years ago. The big gray cat on the post seems to be the leader of the pack.

Wild cats find a home
Old abandon house shelters
All from winter’s cold

People have gone but
Cats remain // a feral pack
Guilty neighbors come
Bringing trays of food for them
Keeping their distance they eat

Never experience human touch

First Bloom

IMG_1360

The daffodils began showing a couple of weeks ago. I saw the buds had formed last week. Today the first bloom opened in the sunshine along my front walk. With more cold weather to come, it will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

Mild winter // cool rains

Bring daffodil bulbs to life

Blooming before spring

Smoke Screens and Mirrors

EER_0269 (2)

With the Impeachment hearings going full throttle, it seems everyone parrots  an opinion. It once again brings to mind a poem I wrote during the last election campaign. As the political circus plays out on TV, nothing is ever as it seems.  Our representative share with us on a need to know basis, and the news media shares on an everything you don’t want to know and more basis. I will be glad when this reality TV “Survivor” show runs its course, and congressional parrots go back in their cage to work at getting things done for the American people.

Politics
A circus of smoke and mirrors
Half-truths polished and shiny
Stretching every word out of context
Smoke screens of the insignificant
Always hiding reality
Behind a cover of lies
Showing only fragments
Promising pots of gold
At the end of the rainbow
False hope in a holey bucket
Filled with wishes and fantasies
Pouring steadily out the bottom
Mirrors in a TV funhouse of fright
Giving only distorted views
Twisting everything out of proportion
Don’t believe the hype
Look beyond the smoke and mirrors
Dig out the shreds of truth
Always remember
What you see is NOT what you will get

A Life Well Lived…

The story of  my Grandfather Christian Roth is now available on the Kindle e-book format at amazon.com. It is what I call a fictional biography. Information was passed down to me by my oldest first cousin, which I took and embellished. The facts of the happenings and events were all true, but many of the details were added by me to create the story.
The video above gives a 360 degree view of the exact setting of the book, near Allensville, Pennsylvania. The little gray farm house is where my Grandfather lived and where my father was raised. The white farm across the field is where my mother grew up.
My grandfather came to America with his family from Switzerland in 1882. They were originally form Altkirch, France, but had moved to Switzerland to avoid the Franco=Prussian war.
My grandfather was a concrete mason by trade. He had a little 17 acre farm, and raised skunks to earn extra money.  He was very creative as you will see. Some of his concrete work still remains in the area.
I think you will find the book fascinating and fun to read. Click the link below to view and read.

Or.. go to amazon.com and look up the title A Live Well Lived – Dwight Roth.

**The video above is also the setting for my e-book memoir Farm Stories also found on amazon.com under my name…

Secrets of Aging

IMG_3062 (2)
Aging carries with it secrets many are reluctant to tell. When one spouse begins experiencing dementia, the other often compensates by keeping it a secret as long as possible.
We saw this with my father-in-law a number of years ago. As he began to be confused at times, she would write the directions or an address on an index card for him to carry along, in case he forgot.
In one instant he came from volunteering at the local hospital and could not remember where he had parked his car. It took him two hours and some help from the staff to find it.
In time the secrets of dementia reveal themselves. At that point hard family decisions have to be made regarding the future.

Secrets of aging
Will always reveal themselves
Winter closes in…

Today at d’Verse, Merril asked us to think about secrets. They come in many forms, but none so sad as when we age. These are secrets we ususally can’t keep.

I Am Here!

EER_0735 (2)
One never hides his face when reaching the summit of a mountain. The long and arduous journey, up the treacherous rock face, challenges all that we have within us. Reaching the top, we see the grand vista below.
It calls for us to cry out, “I’m here!!” “I made it to the top!”
And, as we pause, we hear the echo of our voice, reverberating from the distant valley,
“I am here! …am here!” .. am here!”
“I made it to the top! …the top … the top”
As I reflect on D. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, at the Lincoln Memorial, I see the same thing happening.
Maya Angelou described it this way,

“The Rock cries out to us today,
You may stand upon me,
But do not hide your face.”

We still hear those echoes today! “I’m here……”
*********

At d‘Verse today, we are writing prose. Frank asked us to write a piece of only 144 words reflecting on and including the quote from Maya Angelou. Today is Martin Luther King Day in the US.
