Blossoms to Beans

I am sad to see the beautiful purple hyacinth blossoms falling as the bees and humming bird suck out the last bit of nectar. Pollen has been passed around freely by all, and the cool breath of Fall is creeping in behind shortened days. In place of the blossoms purple seed pods emerge carrying on new life from season to season.

Offered Wine… Served Kool-Aide

Beware you serfs, sucked in

by superfluous words wrapped in thorns

pricked and pounded by talking heads

offering hot air opinions

floating away,

bursting in mid air

bottle rocket promises full of

spectacular show and nothing more

*

Beware of blunderbuss arrows

pulled from your quiver of bias

shot from tensioned bow pulled

back, bleeding hearts left crying

wounds that never heal, running

blood red, not black, white, or yellow

dreams stained streets crying for hope

futures down times drain,

never coming to fruition

*

Beware you serfs, feeding off crumbs

from the masters table thinking

caviar and filet minion

Promised “a chicken in every pot”

only to find bones and feathers

floating in cesspools of bigotry and hate

destroying the marrow of society

grinding bones of workers

into mortar for castles of gold

*

Beware you serfs when you watch

cherry picking favorite words and lines

feeling like twisted truth is genuine

offering you Wine … but serving Kool-aide

Today at d’Verse, Lisa asked us to consider the Vatic Voice, the voice of the prophet in our poetry, speaking as though from the voice of God! I decided to try something different for me with a prophetic political rant. Tonight is the first of the Presidential Debates. Never have we had such extreme differences in the candidates. It is easy to simply choose someone who thinks and talks like we do, but there is much more at stake. We are choosing a way of thinking for the future of the country. The two candidates are really irrelevant, in my opinion. We are voting for a philosophy.

Chasing High Tide

There is nothing more beautiful than full moon light riding on ocean waves. As fall comes on, and tourists crawl back into their cocoons, the lunar cycle continues with two full moons in the month of October. The Harvest Moon comes on the first and the Blue Moon comes on the thirty-first.

Tonight at d”Verse Frank Tassone asked us to write our Monday Haibun using the moon as our prompt. Two full moons are happening this year in the month of October. I took two of my paintings and changed them into black and white for effect.

The Cat at the Top

Cat at the top of the heap

doesn’t ever want to lose his seat

But the more he shovels it

Out from under him

The more he gets called a creep

His wife seems all prim and proper

Though it seems she has little to offer

She is there by his side

with nothing to hide

Still the media has often scoffed her

So when this weird year is over

And we are hopefully done with covid

We will know which cat will shine

For now we’ll be Biden our time and…

Wait to see if Trump’s base has voted

Morning Bursts Forth

Morning bursts forth in all its radiant glory

Peering into the dark sheltered woods

Highlighting the trees dancing on flowers

The stepping stones draw me to the trees

To the mysterious woods sheltering the creek

Turning to mush in summer’s heat

Frogs buried in the mud keep cool

Sending out their sharp croaks

calling for someone to hear

Morning breezes soon shift

to a sauna of heat and humidity

But for now the glorious morning rests

 on the yellow buttercups

Red salvia bathed in the sunlight

reach toward the heavens

Calling me to come join them

In the exhilaration of the beckoning day

I wrote this four years ago, but I felt like it was time to post it again as I looked out across the bottom filled with blooming wildflowers covering the creek!

The Herring Net

Painting by Winslow Homer – The Herring Net

This old canvas board print came through the Habitat Restore where I volunteer two afternoons a week. It was in pretty shabby shape, worn and in need of cleaning. I found that it was a painting by Winslow Homer. It was about ready to be thrown out, so I said I would take it home and see if I could restore it. I went back over the painting with the original colors and brightened it up. I am very happy with the results.

worn ready for the dumpster

Restoration shines

Opinion and Truth

In today’s divided society, with cameras everywhere, no one wants to wait for the system to do its job. We all have our opinions about what we are fed on the News Media. Some believe everything and others believe none of it. Protests and riots occur immediately when incidents happen. When we are given only half of the truth, we tend to accept it as the whole truth. This divides us even more. When opinion becomes truth we are all in trouble.

Social media

Everyone judge and jury

Public Opinion

Tantrums thrown stores up in flames

Not everyone gets their way

Today at d’Verse, Grace asked us to write a protest poem. She emphasized that words and poetry are powerful tool that can help bring about change in our world. I struggle with all division and misinformation that comes across social media. The tragic deaths of black men and women, as well as police officers, and children killed in crossfire disturbs me greatly. Somehow we need to learn to listen to each other and co-operate together to make everyone’s life better. I have written my poem in the Tanka format!

Fly Me to a Star

Skeleton key

rejected

heart of stone, cold

birthed of bloody fire

fire’s frigid reflection

pocked complexion

ashen emotions

powdered cheeks

laid bare…

swallowed away

I tip my top

riding Orion’s space

in hand rejected metal

key to your heart

unturned, upturned

sailing

galaxied space

winged bird

all-seeing-eye

whisks me on

seeking

hot smoldering

star-fire love melting

key to my heart

offered unconditionally

For d’Verse Poets Pub today, we are writing Ekphrastic Poetry. We are to write a poem motivated by one of artist Catrin Welz-Stein’s images. (I decided to try what I will call a “Lucy style poem” with this one.) A little different from my usual casual write. Enjoy!!

You can find her work at: http://catrin-stein.imagekind.com/store/

Writing the Roller Coaster

Up up they go…

climbing skyward as one

cresting the peak

a perfect arc

chasing the dip

pushing gravitational rush

G-forces build

engines roar

pulling the stick

planes rise

climbing next loop

tracks up

tracks down

coaster sky tracks

fade to blue

windy dissolution

Today at d’Verse, De Jackson asked us to let the sky be the limit and use sky as our prompt. This is Quadrille Monday, so we are to make a poem of exactly 44 words.

Every year on the first weekend of November our local airport sponsors an air show called War Birds Over Monroe. We live nearby so we can see a lot of the sky maneuvers from our deck. These are a few of the loop-t-loops!
