“Broken shadows across the cracked ground”
Sunflower bows its withered head
Dry seeds pecked out by finches
Leaves droop in hot sunshine
Stalk towering tall
Equinox winks
Trees blushing
Welcome
Fall

Today’s Poetics at d’Verse once again challenges me to try something new. Laura asked us to write a poem using a line from a list given. The one I am doing is the Nonet, which is syllable based starting with nine and ending with one. She gave us a choice of beginning lines and we had to continue it in sequence. I chose: “Broken shadows across the cracked ground” (cite Merwin) .With the Fall Equinox just around the corner, I used my dried up sunflower as my subject.
Join us at: https://dversepoets.com click on the Mr. Linkey box and choose a poem to read from the list of writers.

Equinox winks, and yes, autumn is finally here. Those withered heads are sad to see.

ha – enjoyed the blushing trees welcoming fall. So sad, about the sunflowers though.

The sunflowers bow in surrender to changing season…there’s beauty in the withering as well.

I especially like these lines:
“Sunflower bows its withered head
Dry seeds pecked out by finches”
because I witnessed that in my own garden in the last couple of weeks. 🙂

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Your poem is so delightful to the season. You say the flower in the picture is shy, but I think it looks like it has social anxiety. Lol.
Brilliantly penned, as always. ❤

Your imagery is striking, and your Nonet is pitch syllable perfect. Fall arrives next week, and with it, hopefully, the blessed rain.

The changing of the guard, with the weary sunflower giving way to the blushing trees. Very nice.

Beautiful Nonet!
I think it is such an honor to watch the sunflowers (and all flowrs) during each of the seasons/stages-of-their-life.
One year we had several very tall sunflowers growing in the yard that we had NOT planted. 🙂
I guess the birds thought we needed some and dropped some seeds for us. 🙂
HUGS!!! 🙂

It really is great to watch the seasons progress. Seems I am always ready for the next one when it comes. This was a volunteer sunflower!

Great use of Merwin’s opener – descending Nonet like the season and the bowed sunflower
“Equinox winks
Trees blushing”
lovely lines!
