Rings and Wrinkles

“When you split your own wood, it warms your twice!”

I loved taking the maul and lifting it back over my head, bring it down hard enough to make the wood fly in both directions. I split my own firewood for many years, until one day I ended up with two ruptured discs. We had a fireplace insert wood stove that provide a lot of good heat from that wood. It is true what they say, “When you split your own wood, it warms your twice!” After my back surgery, I got smart and purchased a used wood splitter which saved my back and worked very well.

Cutting through the tree trunks with a chainsaw was exciting to me. I never knew what I would fine inside. Narrow rings and wide rings revealed dry years and wet years. Counting the rings gave me an idea how old the tree might be. Sometimes there were hollow rotten spaces, filled with termites or ants, that showed the tree was not in the best of health. Wood is a great renewable resource, when trees are replanted and managed for the future.

Rings left in a tree

Like wrinkles on our faces

How old do you think this oak tree might have been?!

The Mirror Never Lies

IMG_6338.JPGAge has a way of drawing us closer to the mirror
Studying the trails of life etched on our face
Reflecting the future // that is yet to come;
Removing the cataracts of denial as changes took place
Demanding we see life for what it is in the clear and bright.
Age calls us to reflection on years gone by
On joys and sorrows that have come and passed us by;
Reflections on things we held near and dear
Of friends and family that brought us cheer
Age has a way of revealing the truth
Of life of death // of faith and the eternal;
Calling us to remember // as we study our face…
Though this may not be the image we’d hoped for;
Shattering the mirror does not alter or erase.
The mirror never lies

Perfection

Wild Woman in Pearls

Uniqueness is Perfection
It is not perfection that makes us special
It‘s uniqueness and character
It is not smooth faces that tells the story
The gray and the wrinkles are our glory
It’s the wrinkles of time that show who we are

Years of strain and years of pain
Bring out the character in everyone
Allows us to remember all the fun

Botox and silicone can stretch us tight
Filling up wrinkles and sags
It stretches us tight and we look a fright
When the make-up comes off each night

After years of work, play, and fun
The thing that makes us special
Is not perfection or a smooth complexion
Our uniqueness makes us the exception.

So why worry over what time has wrought
Thinking we can make it better
We create a mask with our aim for perfection
Hiding our uniqueness and losing our perception
That aging person in this vessel of clay
Is a reflection of His work
The unique image God created
In His eyes
We’re unique and highly rated

Painting Wild Woman in Pearls: Dwight L. Roth

This is one of my favorite poems. It expresses what I believe is lacking in our society today.  Uniqueness always rises to the top. I did not get a good photo of my painting before it was taken away by a friend and neighbor. Both the poem and the painting say and show what I am trying to express in this poem. This being posted on the d’Vers~Poetry Pub for open link Thursday!

Look In the Mirror

Image0010

Look in the Mirror

When you look in the mirror… Smile

Remember the person who smiled back at you

So many years ago when you were young

Remember the person who spent time combing hair

Working to achieve that suave killer look

Smile when you remember your skinny self

Tanned muscular abs smooth clear skin long beautiful legs

When you look into the mirror look past the wrinkles

The waddle under the chin those flabby arms

That once held a young lover

They’re still there made for new young loves

Your grandchildren wrap them tightly

When you look into the mirror… Smile

And the face in the mirror smiles back

Forget fifty sixty or seventy think thirty

Stand naked and remember it is not the sags

Not the wrinkles nor the flab but rather

The person inside that creates the smile

The smile you shared with everyone

One that caught the eye of a lover

The one that gave off magnetic attraction

That is the real you the irresistible

Remember every body ages

Changes

Grows old on the outside

When you look in the mirror

Let your mind be young

Let your thoughts be beautiful

Let the love you once had

Continue to be genuine

Don’t be superficial

Look deep and remember the real you

You are still in there

When you look in the mirror… Smile

Give Me Wrinkles

Pop and Mom 001

I am always amazed at celebrities who are as old as I am, yet have faces of a forty-year-old. It looks smooth, but does not match their age. I have always been one to go for the natural look. Make-up, to me, seems to only cover ups natural beauty. Some have so much cosmetic work done that when they die, they won’t need to be embalmed. They will be perfect just the way they are!

Give me wrinkles!

Don’t embalm me before my time

Filling my skin with foreign fluids

Pumping up my crow’s feet

Smoothing out my forehead lines

Porcelain skin looks lovely on the young

Yet they cover it with paint and shade

Thinking the artificial somehow looks better

Hiding their natural beauty

Don’t embalm me before my time

Pumping me full of water balloons of silicone

Painful stretching to achieve cleavage

Bringing side effects and risks to health

Just to attain that statuesque look

Don’t embalm me before my time

Let me keep my wrinkles and my lines

Aging with rings like an old oak tree

Scars of battles long past

Showing character and strength

In the body given me
