Putting on a Hug

Our disposable society has a lot of downside and excess baggage that comes with it. I believe we lose so much these days because we are too quick to discard what we once held dear. Whether it be friends or family or spouse, everything these days is dispensable. Commitment and vows seem to be archaic confinements in this generation. We seem to forget that in relationships we will have differences; things that may hurt deeply, but forgiveness is always a part of life. Without forgiveness, we will go on repeating our same mistakes and adding more and more baggage to our life’s load.

She tells me it’s time to throw it out

Faded and worn // button missing

But to me it is something special

A security blanket of sorts

Putting on this old shirt is like

putting on a hug

*

Just like a long-time friend

with all our quirks and flaws

We are something special

A security blanket of sorts

Having you as a friend is like

putting on a hug

Paradigm Shift

EER_0192

Co-dependence can be very destructive to relationships. In marriage, when one partner expects their partner to fit into their plans and their schedule, it isn’t long before tension and conflicts develop. For the co-dependent partner it is a major paradigm shift to learn to live with, but somewhat independent of the other person. Today at d’Verse, Amaya is asking us to write a Pentimento poem, which derives from the Italian meaning  for repentance. It is to show how one can change their way of thinking in a way that makes life more positive for all. This is my story.

Paradigm Shift

Committed for life// together we stood

Taking our vows that day

Smiles on our face // stars in our eyes

When opposites commit,  fire sometimes flies.

One holds on the other wants space

A head on collision in the race

Trains not always riding on the same tracks

Co-dependence can be overwhelming

I thought togetherness meant doing everything together

I learned independence is sometimes better

Struggling // I pushed off on my own

Not always expecting reciprocation.

Creativity emerged I had not expected

Life is much better now that I’ve reflected

Togetherness may mean riding parallel tracks

Commitment may mean traveling in the same direction…

Leaving co-dependence behind…

Maintaining each ones identity and self-worth

Leap of Faith

IMG_5009 Dwight & Ruth Selfie at Mtyl Bch

Today, at the d’verse~Poetry Pub, we have been asked to write a Quadrille (44 words) using the word leap. Check out the d’verse site at: https://dversepoets.com/

Today, the first day January 2018

I remember

On the steps of the the Ad Building

You captivated me with your innocent smile

In 1969, as America took the leap

Landing men on the moon,

We planned our leap of faith

Vows lasting a lifetime

Relationships

EER_0167

Relationships

Relationships like railings have a central focus

Holding two similar yet different pieces together

When simply laid on the post they will soon fall apart

Some have nails of commitment holding them in place

And salt treatment to help them last twenty years

Many make commitments to stay joined for a lifetime

In time decay occurs around the things that brought them together

If left uncared for those things will not be strong enough

And the relationship will fall apart

I am afraid the song “Love Will Keep Us Together”

Is not enough

For when the decay begins

Love as it used to be goes right out the window

The song should read, “Work will keep us together

Relationships take hard work, compassion, and forgiveness

And most of all God’s grace to keep them together

Still Loving You

eer_0001

What does it take to stay married for forty-seven years? It takes commitment and love to make a marriage work.  None of us are saints to live with in a relationship. It does not take long for the honeymoon to wear off and the lifetime reality show to start!  Adjusting to one another is not an easy task. There are many things that can derail a marriage. But I believe it is the ongoing commitment that makes it last. For some the vow of commitment is, ” for as long as we love each other.” For me it is, “for as long as we both shall live, we will love each other!”

Still Loving You

After all these years

47 to be exact

We are the odd ones

Still together all intact

Many ups and downs

Through thick and thin

And two little boys

With big wide grins

There were times

We could have bailed

But our commitment is solid

Our love did not fail

Now looking back

On all these years

With six beautiful grands

That we love to cheer

For better and for worse

We stayed by those vows

Love includes both

Not one or the other

I love you
