Sand and Water

Dwight Chris and Jason at Nags Head 001 (2)

The seventies were a fun time in my life. We loved camping at Emerald Isle Travel-n-Park and climbing over the dunes to get to the wide flat beach below. When you are young, 90 F days and sleeping in an 8×10 canvas tent were not a hardship. Riding the waves on blow-up tubes was so much fun. Playing in the sand with our two boys, collecting shells, and building sand creations were memorable summer events.

Now the boys are grown with children of their own, making memories in the sand and floating on ocean waves. Those times pass so quickly. Cherish every minute you have with your children.

joy in the journey

Sea turtle rests in soft sand

High Tide is coming

Waves breach sandy wall

Sea sculpture in jeopardy

Turtle loses head

High tide claims its own

Turtle disappears in surf

Memories forever

The Thrill of Discovery

DSC_0206 (2)

I can still remember the lore of water and mud, of mountain streams, and rotten logs and  bugs under rocks.  Nature’s mysteries still draw me to get my feet in the mud, letting it squish up between my toes. One of our best learning environments is all around us.  I enjoyed watching these children searching the lake bank and under stumps for that special treasure, while totally oblivious to everything else around them.

Nature’s mysteries

Focused… searching  intently

Treasures in lake mud

Summer Fun

Sun and Surf

Puddles of molten gold in the water

Reflecting the morning sun

Watching the tide as it rises and alters

Those magical castles of fun

Sandpipers and gulls run with the surf

Eating their squiggling breakfasts

Snatching critters from the receding kerf

Before it washes past them

Brown Pelicans float over the shallows

Diving for fish in waves

Long necks & scooped beaks easily swallow

Slippery morsels that cannot be saved

Bronzed beauties oiled, laid out, and frying

On beach towels in the sun

Young boys discretely spying

Cutting up and having fun

Shells and driftwood litter the beach

Collected by old and young alike

Oooing  and awwwing as they examine each piece

Saving every one with delight

Open link night at d’verse, where Bjorn suggests we think about summer and what we enjoy doing. We always enjoyed going to the beach each summer and watching the children play in the surf, ride the swells, and build sand creations.  This poem takes us back to the very beginning!  We will be taking a break for a couple of weeks at d’verse, but we will all come back the end of July.
