The Flow

Steel Bridge over the North Saskatchewan River – Edmonton, Alberta

North Saskatchewan

Cars flow above river’s flow

Both will freeze over

Steel bridge long gone … cars still flow

Traded for concrete four-lane

I took this photo many years ago from the top of the CN Tower in Edmonton, Alberta. What a different perspective from the top floor. Security would not let us up there these day!

This is written in the Tanka form.

Reclamation

In the winter of 2018 and 2019 the gas company excavated about a hundred foot clearing and installed a 12 inch natural gas line six to eight feet deep! We were devastated to see all of the beautiful trees being turned into wood chips. When they were finished they installed thousands of feet of black plastic silt fence all around the work site to prevent run off into the waterways.

The fiber mats that were put down on both sides of the stream must have been filled with wild flower seeds. When summer came there appeared a large number of yellow Daisies and Black Eyed Susans all across the bottom. The grass they sowed came up and the area began to recover.

This past week they came in with a small track hoe and pulled up all the steel fence posts and ripped up the black silt fence. They loaded it all on a small four wheeler truck hauled it all away. The damage they did was minimal. Now the area can completely heal and we can again see the beautiful flowers bloom in the bottom along the creek.

Then What? (Political Satire)

When distasteful statues of heritage are gone

and the founding fathers permanently buried

and our country’s history erased // then what?

When the constitution is rewritten

and modified and amendments deleted

in the name of progress // then what?

When the drive of capitalism is sedated

and wealth redistributed to those who have never worked

and banks replaced by government 666 chips // then what?

When everyone is forced into political correctness

and all the “I’m sorry people” are reconditioned

to all think alike // then what?

When “swords are beaten into plowshares”

and all the guns are recycled to a few

who keep the disgruntled in line // then what?

When religions are squelched for deviant thinking

and non compliance revives the “burning at the stake”

and “God is Dead” // then what?

When anarchy and revolution turns into an Orwellian nightmare

and Big Brother/Sister monitors and controls everything we do

and creativity and culture become acts of treason // then what?

2024 is not that far away!

As I watch the conflict and clashes between protesters/rioter and Police and National Guardsmen in Portland and across the country, it makes me wonder whether they have thought beyond their present anger, the destruction of Government Buildings, De-funding the Police, Black Lives Matter, and anarchy.

I have compiled some outrageous questions, all containing some truth, for them and us to think about!

My Friend Ivor Stevens said it best in his Haiku:

Cold steel’s not power

Love can’t be an iron fist

Hand in hand we breathe

When Trees Are Gone

EER_0532 (2)

With the economy booming in our area, more and more trees are being cleared to make room for new housing developments. There is no attempt to save the existing trees. Everything is stripped to bare ground, ground up and hauled away. Giant machines turn fifty year old trees into wood chips in a matter of minutes.

What happens when we remove so many trees from our environment? Wildlife gets condensed into smaller and smaller areas. Birds lose their annual nesting locations, and more and more deer are killed by the on slot of cars brought on by development. There appears to be little or no effort to create better highways to accomodate the increased vehicles. We wonder why climate change is bringing warmer weather. Could it be that we take little thought for the tree we are so eager to discard.

Trees cry tears and leaves

Chipper turns years into chips

Earth struggles to breathe
