Cobwebs of the Blue Ridge

EER_0558
Giant spiders of steel haunt the Blue Ridge
And many mountains across the country;
Spinning their endless webs of twisted wire
Across peaks and valleys they endlessly stretch;
Glistening in the sunshine like silver threads
Shimmering with dew drops when it rains;
Full of power deadly currents of life.
Some with twenty-five thousand volts
From dams to cities across the way.
These giant colossuses spread their webs
Bringing energy and light to the darkest night;
Mountain Spiders’ webs already spun
Woven across the scars of the landscape;
Over rocks and hills with a never ending hum
Without them life as we know it would cease.

Power All Around Us

IMG_1922 (2)

The forces of nature are astounding! Whether it be an erupting volcano or a powerful waterfall, we can only stand in awe of the forces at work in the world around us. This past year we watched fires destroy a whole town in California, mudslides carry houses crashing down the slopes, and Tornados that flatten everything in their path.

And then we see the power of creation in opposite ways in the beauty of birds, flowers, butterflies. and rainbows. The God of creation must have had a wonderful time when he created all these things that make us marvel. I find it very hard to believe that this all happened out of nothing or from an exploding star.  The earth is a very special place!

God of creation
Revealed in power and grace
Leaving us in awe
Purpose in every detail
Makes my faith an easy choice

Tarpits

IMG_3875

Tarpits swallow everything that steps in them

From the newcomer to the prominent and powerful

From the Pterodactyl to the T-Rex

The quicksand of tar swallows them all

Leaving them with black hearts and sticky fingers.

Just as the dinosaurs sank into extinction

‘So will our government // if all we do is:

Promise what we know we can’t deliver

Appeal to the emotions of a radical base

Sell out to the special interests

Get caught in the web of lies and deceit

           Give in to political pressure

           Lose our moral compass

And… worry more about losing power

      …Than losing themselves…

In the tarpits of political delusion

Superpower

IMG_7015

Lillian gave us the challenge to use Superhero or Superpower in a poem for the d’Verse Poetry Pub.  There is a power greater than ourselves that I chose to write about.  I believe true Superheroes are real people of faith who believe in themselves and tap into the power of God in their lives. They help make the world a better place.

Clark Kent steps into the Phone Booth

In a second he comes out

Wearing a Cape…

Tights and a gymnast suit

The Batcave // the Batmobile

The Spider Suit and Webs

Shields and Armbands…

All of this paraphernalia of a Superhero

Doesn’t make the hero // anyone can dress up

The real superpowers come from within

Confidence and Strength don’t need suits

Knowing who you are comes from your roots

With confidence you can fly

Your strength can move mountains

Confidence stands against evil

Strength walks hand in hand with the oppressed

Where does the strength within come from?

it comes from…

A super power greater than ourselves

My strength comes from the Lord

Who made heaven and earth

God is my source

Peace for You and Me

EER_0524

My wish for the new year is that we could learn to live in peace with one another. We have had a year of division and strife in this country and around the world. Power and control seem to be what many desire. But for me, I would love to see the world learn to be more accepting of others loving each other as God loves, extending the hand of grace to all. We can blow ourselves to kingdom come, but real Peace does not come from power, rather from Love and Compassion.

Peace

Can peace come from a heart of fear?

From the hand clinched tightly in defense

Trying to save what is already lost

No…

Only from a heart of Love!

Selfless love that is sacrificial

Knowing that it may mean

the end of one’s self

for the sake of another

A heart that does not grasp

But rather opens the hand of God

to one in need

So that all may live in Peace

Feel the Power

EER_0063

I am always been fascinated with power. Tractor Trailer trucks exude raw power as they haul our products up and down the highways. Tractors in the field have evolved into huge transformer-like machines that cut our grain and till our fields. The power of storms and the aftermath of destruction conjure up great respect for what they can do. I love the feeling of power as I sit on a tractor and ride through the fields. Power comes in so many forms. I thought I would share some of them in this poem!

Power
Power is a beautiful thing
when used for the common good
Steam trains of my childhood
Dragons of steel
Snorting their way through the Pennsylvania hills
Pulling a hundred coal cars
to the steel mills at Pittsburgh

IMG_0416

Farmall tractors shiny red
Roaring through the fields
Pulling plow and disc
through soil of rock and clay
Rolling over blankets of earth
Smoothing them like a quilt
Feeling all that power surging under me
as I ride the turf surf

EER_0062

Kenworth, Peterbuilt, and Mack haul it all
Roaring down the highway
Tires humming on the asphalt
Diesel engines fifty-three foot trailers
Convoys of steel
Feeding never ending appetites of “the Blessed”

IMG_2990

Airplanes, Subways, Ships, and Space Shuttles
Power at its best
Carry us to the far corners
of the earth and beyond
Connecting one race of man with one another
Opening the heart to greed
Gold, Diamonds, Oil and Land
Override common sense
Override the common good

Destructive Power looms in the shadows
Threatening us with guns and bombs
Killing maiming destroying our fellowmen

Selfish power
Manipulation
Threats
Political Gain
Dark Power for devious minds
Living only for themselves

Delusions of money, wealth, and fame
Disappear like flash paper in a magician’s hand

EER_0790

Nature’s power far outweighs them all
Beyond manipulation
It overwhelms without consent
Volcanoes, Typhoons, Earthquakes, and Floods
Power from beyond
Far exceeding anything
our minute minds can conceive

The most beautiful power of all
Is the power of love

IMG_0684_1

Above the physical
Above the greed
Even above the natural
Nothing moves the heart of man like love
The love of a child
The unselfish heart
Moves all toward the heart of God

Your Driving Force

Image0023

Fear

Fear creates anxiety

Believing we are helpless

Unable to control our future

Fear drives us to climb on board

Riding the band wagon of distress

Cheering as we careen toward the cliff

Just like Thelma and Louise

Fear pre-empts good judgement

Listening to our insecurities

Believing in hopelessness

Instead of common sense

Fear grasps for that last straw

Knowing it will not save us

While denying the inevitable

Fear is the method of control

For politicians, religious leaders, and jihadi terrorists

Dictators, Presidents, Kings, and Priests

Why do we choose a spirit of fear

When we could have…

“…a Spirit of power, of love, and of a strong mind” (NKJV)
