Then What? (Political Satire)

IMG_5886 (2)

When distasteful statues of heritage are gone

and the founding fathers permanently buried

and our country’s history erased // then what?

When the constitution is rewritten

and modified and amendments deleted

in the name of progress // then what?

When the drive of capitalism is sedated

and wealth redistributed to those who have never worked

and banks replaced by government 666 chips // then what?

When everyone is forced into political correctness

and all the “I’m sorry people” are reconditioned

to all think alike // then what?

When “swords are beaten into plowshares”

and all the guns are recycled to a few

who keep the disgruntled in line // then what?

When religions are squelched for deviant thinking

and non compliance revives the “burning at the stake”

and “God is Dead” // then what?

When anarchy and revolution turns into an Orwellian nightmare

and Big Brother/Sister monitors and controls everything we do

and creativity and culture become acts of treason // then what?

2024 is not that far away!

As I watch the conflict and clashes between protesters/rioter and Police and National Guardsmen in Portland and across the country, it makes me wonder whether they have thought beyond their present anger, the destruction of Government Buildings, De-funding the Police, Black Lives Matter, and anarchy.

I have compiled some outrageous questions, all containing some truth, for them and us to think about!

My Friend Ivor Stevens said it best in his Haiku:

Cold steel’s not power

Love can’t be an iron fist

Hand in hand we breathe

When Death Comes Knocking

IMG_2630 (2)
It does make us rethink life when death is knocking
making us withdraw into our cocoons
Time to rethink our way of life // our values // our purpose
while we quarantine in our homes
Forced reflection demanded when death offers its portal
Looking out on quiet streets
Neighbors now masked strangers
Some live in fear // most take precautions
Others choose denial // finding reality hard to face
We now live in a time warp somewhere out in space
Getting prepared to make entrance
into a strange new world
Uncertain what walking through this portal may reveal
We step out cautiously and do as we’re told
Life is precious // some will die // most will live
We just hope and pray death’s portal
is not our chamber door

Staircase Painting: Dwight L. Roth

Today at d’Verse, Anmol asked to consider the word portal for our prompt today! As we move into a new way of living with the dangers that are all around us, I chose to write about how it affects us mentally as well as physically.

Love…the song we sing

In 1967 when I was in college learning to play the guitar, the Youngbloods came out with their hit song “Get Together”. Then, it was Civil Right and the Viet Nam War that divided our country. Now it is divided for very different reasons. There call to come together and “Love one another right now!” still holds true today. Utopian solutions never come through politics and ideology. It only comes when we truly love one another. Until then, a utopian society is just a dream. Amaya at d’Verse asked us to write about our idea of utopia. This took me back to the sixties and the cry of the Folk Singers, prophets of the day, calling us to come together.

Dreaming of a utopia where everyone

carries equal importance and worth

I wake to the reality

that we have a very long way to go

Society seems filled with weeds

Growing up in the midst choking out the good

Overwhelming everyone with their personal agendas

Hope and change are delegated to a select few

While the rest wallow in disillusionment

In a society polarized down the middle

The good of all  is lost in contention and self-destruction

Elections seem not to appease the masses on either side

The solution lies not in Sociology or Political Science

Rather in the hearts of men, women, boys and girls

Utopia lies in the understanding of self-giving Love

That is not just a song we sing, but a way of life.

Only the love of God in the hearts of all

Will bring peace and fulfillment in the world
