No Greater Love…

synagog where shooting took place (2)

Yesterday we heard of another shooting in a Jewish place of worship in San Diego, California. One of the women there stepped in front of the gunman and took the bullets protecting her rabbi who was helping children escape. It is so sad that we still have not learned to live in harmony with one another. When will we ever learn?

No Greater Love
Than to give one’s life
So that another might live
No greater cowardice than
Taking the life of
Men women and children
In their place of worship
Hate destroys the soul of society
Love overcomes standing up to hate
Often at great personal sacrifice
Love wins in the end…
Love is of God

Frank Tassone  asked us to consider the lily in our Haikai Poem for Easter Sunday.  The lily has long been a symbol of Easter.  Its beauty is a symbol of purity and new life. Hopefully your day has been a rewarding and inspirational one.

Light for the Soul

IMG_9482 (2)

Winter solstice brings
A dark day //with future hope
Dispelling darkness
See the candle burning bright
Light returns after the night

Men of old waited
In deep darkness for the Light
Their hopes never dimmed
A baby born in darkness
Brought us the Love of God’s Light

Though darkness remains
God’s Grace changes the hearts of men
Light shines all around
Through the lives of believers
In the soul’s dark night // Love Wins!

Utopia

eer_0464

In 1967, when I was in college, a group called the Youngbloods recorded a hit song with the lyrics Let’s Get Together and Love One Another Right Now…  It came out just as the Viet Nam war was ramping up. A call to peace and love, it was a reflection of the flower child generation of the day. I saw on TV that there is a commercial that is using this song as a musical backdrop. The words are wonderful, but as you can see we still have not gotten the message. This poem reflects this same sentiment.  Listen to the song at the end of the poem.

Utopia

Think how great our world would be

If we supported one another more

And left the criticism at home

As we go out the door

Think how great our country would be

If we prayed for our president more

Seeking wisdom, guidance, and freedom from war

Where congress works for the people they serve

Instead of special interests making deals on the curb

Think how great our world would be

If people of all faiths could finally agree

Where those who believe differently

Embrace one another and agree to disagree

Listening to one another without controversy

Think how great our world would be

How much less stress we all would carry

If the networks broadcasted the good people do

Instead of murders killers and political brew

Think how much better the world would be

If following the Golden Rule was our creed

Loving one another with God’s love and forgiveness

Treating our brothers with care and acceptance

We all know this is only a dream

Our dangerous world sometimes makes us scream

But it is nice to think about, if only for a moment

A utopian world where Love is prevalent

Jaded

EER_0480

When evil stares us in the face, something happens within that turns average people into heroes. In our world tragedies like this are becoming more frequent. It can be easy to start to think this is to be expected and common place. But we cannot become jaded. We cannot give in to the evil always present around us. As we saw people in the midst of the firestorm of bullets risking their own lives to help others, we can see that we are greater than any evil force coming against us. Love overcomes in the end. As the Bible tells us, “Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good!

Jaded

Let us not become jaded

With reports of senseless violence

Brought to us in living color

Real time action like virtual reality

Worn across our eyes

Let us not become jaded

When shootings and bombings

Happening in a city next door

Or a country far away

Come across the screen in mixed truth

Let us not become jaded

When evil invades our life

Assuming it to simply be the norm

Listening to the talking heads blame one another

Let us not become jaded

Thinking all is lost and evil has won

Don’t believe it do not fear

Brother helps sister when danger is near

Let us not become jaded

For love is not lost

Tragedy brings unity

Realizing what is really important

Is standing arm in arm and hand in hand

Knowing that in the end Love Wins!
