Midsummer Solstice

Summer solstice here
Midsummer heat arrived early
Thankful for cool air
Sol sistere // sun stands still
Day and night ponder future

Frank Tassone asked us to consider the up coming solstice, which is sometimes referred to as Midsummer Solstice. In the southern hemisphere is the Midwinter Solstice. He asked that we write the haikai poem of our choice (haiku, senryu, haibun, tanka, haiga, renga, etc.) that alludes to our choice of either midsummer (manatsu) of midwinter (mafuyu).

Light in the Darkness

Darkness upon us
The light of the world is born
Winter Solstice comes
A bright new day is dawning
Overcoming our darkness

Today on Frank Tassone’s Haikai challenge he asked us to write a poem about the Winter Solstice which will occur this coming week.

Elongated Day

Frank asked us to write some couplets for d’Verse today. Since this is the first day of summer in our hemisphere, he suggested that we write about the Solstice. This is my summer couplet.

Summer came by with elongated day
Sweating and steaming I came out to play

Sunrays unrelenting, I went inside
In air-conditioned comfort I’ll reside

Exaggerated day will come and go
I’m looking forward to next winter’s snow

Until then it’s iced tea and shady trees
On these long hot days let me feel the breeze
