Don’t Worry Be Happy

Don’t let the possibilities of tomorrow spoil the good day you have at present!
Live one day at a time // find joy in each day
avoid talk media effervescent
Keep in touch with others
look out for the needs of those around you
Enjoy the sunshine
take a walk
listen to the birds
breathe in the fresh air
Read a good book
turn off the screen and talk to each other
Call a relative
let them know you are concerned for their welfare
Tomorrow may be different
but today is a great day
make the most of it!

Lone Crocus

IMG_1390 (2)

Touches of spring come up out of the ground, reminding us not to despair. Warm weather is just around the corner. I saw this lone crocus shining in the pine-bark mulch along my sidewalk. The tiny green sprigs accenting the egg-yoke colored blossom is a joy to see. The daffodils are already starting to bloom as warm southerly breezes  continue through this week here in North Carolina.

Sunshine pushes through

Defying winter’s cold chill

Letting the chips fall

Happiness and Joy

IMG_0351 (2)

Christmas is a time when many think it is what we get that brings happiness and joy. What often happens is that after all the gifts are exchanged and the holiday decorations are back in the box, the mood changes from happiness to depression and loneliness. What is the difference between happiness and joy in our life. I posted this poem earlier, but I felt that it might be appropriate for this Holiday season.

Happiness and Joy
Happiness is a little bird
Perched on the rail
Right within my grasp
Only to fly away
The moment
I reach out to take hold of it.
Joy is the blood
Pumping through my veins
A constant rhythm of rejuvenation
Not something to be possessed
Rather something to be
Joy is what keeps my soul alive

Frank Tassone asked us to write a Haikai poem about Christmas or Hanukah. This is also the Winter Solstice and the shortest day in our hemisphere.

Our Last Christmas Together

IMG_7042 (2)

Back in 2012, we celebrated our last Christmas with my wife’s mother. She had just been diagnosed with and inoperable brain tumor. It was a time of very deep and mixed emotions. Her father was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, and in January of 2013 had to be placed in a care facility as well. As I look at this photo, I see that Mother has resigned herself to what is to come and greatly enjoyed our last Christmas together. On the other hand Dad was filled with anxiety at the anticipation of being left alone without his wife to care for him.  You can see that his smile did not hold the same resignation as Mother’s. The adjustments of aging and loss are much deeper than any of us can imagine. As we complete our fiftieth year together, I often reflect on that Christmas, and on what is still to come.
Enjoying Christmas
Knowing everything will change
Winter’s mixed feelings

Filling the Void

EER_0912
During the Christmas season, we often find we are caught up in the Holiday rush to find the right gift.  The commercial aspects of Christmas start before Thanksgiving. Stores and retailers all want to cash in as people rush to buy presents they think will make someone happy. In reality happiness is short lived, but joy is a part of who we are as a person. True joy is found in God’s Love, which is the real reason for the season.
Christmas is not about
Angels
Christmas is not about
Wise men
Mary and Joseph
The baby
In a manger, cold
Not about Santa
Coming
Nor gifts or presents
Wrapped tight
Not shining bright lights
At night
Christmas is our sign
His love
Permeating Love
Filling
A universal void
Our hearts
Filled by the great I AM

Finding Meaning in Life

EER_0314 (2).JPG

The meaning of life lies not in the things we have
Nor what we may have accomplished;
But rather, in the life we are living each day.
Friends who care and share themselves with us
Make life a joy knowing they are there.
When we see the laughter in our children’s eyes
Feeling their love and enjoying their hugs.
The joy of sun on our face, the wind in our hair;
Mud squishing between our toes;
Listening to the birds singing their songs;
The chirp of the wren, the cooing of the doves,
Lovingly protecting one another…
Reminding us the touch of a hand and a loving voice
Bring meaning each day to our fast paced life.
Finding meaning in life lies not in the things we have;
But in those we love and those we serve.
The rest is just icing on the cake.

Redefined Dreams

IMG_8141 (2)

I’ve lived many lifetimes // dreamed many dreams
All in seventy-two years // a short span it seems;
Events occur //dreams often changed
Beyond my control // life gets rearranged.
Illness, accidents, joys and sorrows, death and so much more
Created a roller coaster ride in my life // that’s for sure.
Faith and family children and friends
Supported us through that dark night of the soul;
When joy returned and things were great…
They cheered us even more.
As I look back // reflect over all these years
The choices I’ve made through rain and tears;
I’m thankful I hung in there and stayed the course;
For in joy and pain we still have a choice.
I’m now reaping the benefits of redefined dreams;
After seventy-two years sailing life’s streams.

Downey Stops for Lunch

eer_0628

This beautiful bird came by today for lunch at my feeder. Winter birds are always a joy to watch. The Downey Woodpecker is a star. His beauty makes him stand out against the gray woods. The perfection of birds always astounds me! They are one of God’s best creations!

Downey loves my suet

Happy New Years 2019

EER_0259

A New Year’s Blessing
May your old year pass with peace and celebration
May you let all your worries remain in 2018
Hold your friends dear to your heart
Let loyalty and love be your coat of arms
Let your grief do its work in your soul
Never forget those who passed on
Keep your family precious and spouse revered
Treat everyone with dignity and respect
May your wishes become goals to attain
With God’s strength work toward that end
May you follow the light of the Spirit in your heart
Walk with God as you would your closest friend
Trust that all things will work out for your good
Be thankful for all of your blessings of life
May you live every day as the “Word made flesh”
May you be a light and a beacon to all
Happy New Year 2019
