Come Fly With Me

Stamp Art – Dwight L. Roth

Any other summer, but this one, planes would be packed to the max with passengers traveling to destinations all over the world. This summer we can only dream or reflect on places we have already been due to Covid-19. I made this stamp art piece a couple of years ago thinking the sky was the limit and we could go anywhere we chose.

Summer heat is here

And so are we // stuck at home

Hoping fog clears soon

Imagination

Image0024 (2)

Cowboy and Cowgirl sit in the old covered wagon
Feeling the pull of horses on the reigns
Hearing the wheels of the Conestoga Wagon
rumbling beneath them as they  ride across the prairie
Watching for dangers that might be nearby.
*
What fun it is to imagine…
To let one’s mind run wild
They will carry those dreams home tonight
To join with other dreams
in that mind-maze of brain-paths
that crisscross like lightning in the night.

Sweet Friendship

Chris's family Easter 2010 085 (2)

Remember the days when just being close to a girl/guy
Made the day a little brighter and smiles a little bigger?
Fun days when carefree spirits shared the swing
Then took off to look for another adventure in the woods.
Oh for the days of youth // when life was a lightness of being;
Formative times of learning about life and love and relationships
Laying the foundation for future responsibilities
and more permanent bonds of commitment.

Imagine This

Morning Glory 001 (2)

The thrill of the imagination
Takes us places we can never go
Beyond this earthly home
Out into the solar system
Wrapping our minds around the
Concept of a galaxy in a world far far away

Imagine going into the depths of the earth
All the way to China as we used to say
…Our way of saying very deep

Imagine riding with Voyager
As it continues to sail out into the universe
Beyond our solar system // to worlds unknown
Having paid its dues in 2012 sailing on
Singing “I’ll fly away, oh glory I’ll fly away”

Who are the imagineers of the present
With visions beyond this realm
Pushing the outer limits in ways yet to be
Not content to live in Earth’s isolation
Rather seeking new ways to imagine
The reality of a Star Trek generation
Stretching our imaginations even more

Some Roads

EER_0420

Some folks celebrate Christmas in July, so why not  sledding in August. I thought this bit of nostalgia might compensate for the midsummer heat we all seem to be experiencing.

There was a time when

Roads were built around buildings

Making Sledding fun

Afternoon snowmelt freezes

Kids in parkas sailed down the hill

Temperatures falling

No one seemed to mind the cold

Pulling sleds uphill

Riding in the full moon’s light

No technology needed

Great fun and fresh air

Mama’s calling  from the porch

“It’s time to come in!”

Children slept soundly // dreaming

Of  “No School!” and sled riding

Puppy Love

Dwight Roth - Paper Boy 001

Puppy Love

Gouging deep breaking smooth Maple bark

He carved his initials with hers in a heart

Imaginary lovers… she will never know

He’s only thirteen and hormones flow

Fantasies of a chance to hold her hand

To share how he feels as she sits in the stands

A dark haired beauty with a captivating smile

Slim angel of dreams on his mind for awhile

But this love though sweet was never meant to be

Except in the mind of a boy like me

Daydreams and night dreams in my brain collide

Adolescent shyness keeps words locked inside

She’ll never know I was her biggest fan

Who wanted to be near and hold her hand

Many years came and now are gone

But those puppy love dreams still remain

Adolescent fantasies never die

They’re just to be remembered

And put away with a sigh

Little Anna

eer_0796

I frequented a coffee shop a few years ago that had live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. One of the groups who came played and sang with great gusto. Their families often came with them . One of the players had a little four year old daughter with long flowing ringlets who would dance in the middle of the floor as they would play. She held her arms straight out and twirled around to the music. It was one of the sweetest sights I have seen. I wrote this originally as a song as a tribute to Little Anna.

Dance Little Anna

Dance little Anna …sweet Cinderella

Spin and twirl and dance the night away

Close your eyes  …spin and smile

Feel your spirit swirling across the floor

Dance little Anna  … feel the music

Let the rhythm fill your very soul

One day soon you’ll grow up

Then you’ll have to slow up

But, don’t let them steal your spirit away

So Dance little Anna …sweet Cinderella

Spin and twirl and dance the night away

Close your eyes …spin and smile

Feel your spirit swirling across the floor

Dance little Anna …lost in the moment

Let your dreams come floating from your mind

I hope that when you grow up

Your dreams will never slow up

Don’t let them steal your spirit away

So Dance little Anna …sweet Cinderella

Spin and twirl and dance the night away

Close your eyes …spin and smile

Feel your spirit swirling across the floor

Dance little Anna … feel the music

Let the rhythm fill your very soul

One day soon you’ll grow up

Then you’ll have to slow up

But, don’t let them steal your spirit away
