Fifty-One Years Today

Our Love (A Quadrille)*

Our love’s a poem

Written in the tide…

Spelling out our dreams

On the shore of life

Poem of lasting quality

Ebb and flow from day to day

Smooth, serine, mirroring the sky…

Crashing // bold from deep within

Our Love…

Written for the ages

Putting on a Hug

Our disposable society has a lot of downside and excess baggage that comes with it. I believe we lose so much these days because we are too quick to discard what we once held dear. Whether it be friends or family or spouse, everything these days is dispensable. Commitment and vows seem to be archaic confinements in this generation. We seem to forget that in relationships we will have differences; things that may hurt deeply, but forgiveness is always a part of life. Without forgiveness, we will go on repeating our same mistakes and adding more and more baggage to our life’s load.

She tells me it’s time to throw it out

Faded and worn // button missing

But to me it is something special

A security blanket of sorts

Putting on this old shirt is like

putting on a hug

*

Just like a long-time friend

with all our quirks and flaws

We are something special

A security blanket of sorts

Having you as a friend is like

putting on a hug

Relationships

EER_0167

Relationships

Relationships like railings have a central focus

Holding two similar yet different pieces together

When simply laid on the post they will soon fall apart

Some have nails of commitment holding them in place

And salt treatment to help them last twenty years

Many make commitments to stay joined for a lifetime

In time decay occurs around the things that brought them together

If left uncared for those things will not be strong enough

And the relationship will fall apart

I am afraid the song “Love Will Keep Us Together”

Is not enough

For when the decay begins

Love as it used to be goes right out the window

The song should read, “Work will keep us together

Relationships take hard work, compassion, and forgiveness

And most of all God’s grace to keep them together

Opposites Attract

EER_0084

Why are we still together after all these years? I  heard a song that says, “Love will keep us together..” But, I believe it takes more than love. The things that attract at the beginning of a relationship often become the things that irritate us later. I would contend that it takes more than love to keep us together. Read my poem and find out.

Opposites Attract

Amazing how we’re wired

Opposite poles you and me

Attracted for a lifetime

Stuck with each other

In the best way possible

Love, hate, stresses and joys

All because we are so different

Sometimes in sync

At times all turned around

Sometimes like cats and dogs

At others like two peas in a pod

Underlying this oppositeness

A foundation of commitment

Superseding anything our oppositeness brings

Entwined like the roots on the forest floor

Strength in the time of storm

Blooming together joyfully in the sunshine

God ordained

Love without end
