Just Chillin’

DSC_0621 (2)

*Chillin’ is an expression I heard used in Eastern North Carolina which simply means hanging around with nothing to do! I saw a sign on a fence post outside an old country store that read “NO CHILLIN’ ON THIS CORNER” . This little bird sleeping in my feeder today reminded me of that sign.

Hungry Bird

Eastern Blue Grosbeak 3

I had a visit today from an Eastern Blue Grosbeak. He comes to my feeder a few times a year. I am not sure if they are migrating or just tend to stay away. I always like seeing their gorgeous striking colors. This bird was hungry. He hopped right into the cage and ate for five minutes. I thought he would fly away when I got closer to get these photos, but he kept right on eating. It was wonderful to see him again.

Birds are Timeless

A pair of house finches pull sunflower seeds through the mesh. A new year has begun for us; but, for them it is still a matter of survival. Hopefully, my feeder provides them with needed resources as winter comes on strong.

Time keeps on ticking
Means nothing to my finches
Everyday’s the same

The Eastern Blue Grosbeak came to the feeder this week. It is such beautiful, colorful creature. I am amazed that nature’s delicate beauty sits just outside my window!

Redwing Blackbird

Today is the first time I have seen a Redwing Blackbird at my feeder. He was very striking in the morning sunlight. He ate his fill and then was on his way. What a pleasant surprise. I wonder where he is heading?

January Birds

eer_0478

Cold weather in January always brings the birds to my feeder. They bring me a lot of joy as I watch them gobbling down the sunflower seeds and millet. The Red Bellied Woodpecker and Mourning Dove share the feeder together. This is nice to see since birds are often very competitive for the food. Perhaps we could learn from them how to get along.

Kim at d’Verse asked us to write a Haibun that talks about January and all it brings with it. I love my winter birds so I chose to write this one.
