No-vember

No-vember

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member –
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees…”

~from the poem, November by Thomas Hood

November chill has come our way

with ice on the birdbath where they dance and play

But ‘round the corner by the garage door light

Another little spider hangs both day and night

*

With legs spread wide ‘cross the web she hangs

“No comfortable feel in any member” twangs

She dreams of one last insect coming her way

To be be wrapped and served at the end of the day

*

But, “No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees..”

Only white ragweed blown in on the breeze

Her abdomen pregnant with an egg sac released

Woven in webbing to stand November’s squeeze

*

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease

Her work’s almost done then she’ll take her leave

Sarah at d’Verse asked us to write a poem on No, taken from inspiration from the poem, November by Thomas Hood. I decided to write about two more writing spiders that I have been watching for a few weeks. They have gone from skinny to very swollen abdomens. The earlier spider made a large egg sac and then died. These have been hanging around their webs ever since then. With temps down to freezing at night, I was surprised to see they were both still there on the web today.

  1. How lovely a poem appreciating our spiders. She won’t withstand winter, but nature has endowed her with enough hope and wisdom to know, fully ensuring that her (spider’s) batch is there to see spring. Glorious. I enjoyed those.

  2. Spiders are fascinating creatures and, as Sarah said, November is spider season. I love the way you set the scene in the first two lines and then get right down to describing the spiders. Like a spider weaving her web, you wove Hood’s lines in expertly, Dwight!
