When I think back on the things I learned
I wonder what fragment remains after sixty years
Math and Literature History and Civics
all are fading fast, but there is one skill
I use every day, creating this blog for you…
Typing skills remain

Hah! I wish I had taken typing. Could use that skill today, that’s for sure! But I’ve become quite adept at hunt & peck!

I can tell you do very well! The younger generation uses hunt and peck with two thumbs. Amazing!

I agree!! Typing has been so helpful a skill. I do remember a bit of history too.

Thank you Suzette. It is so useful. Bits and pieces of everything else!

My parents made me take personal typing in 10th grade to prepare me for college. I’ve been using it ever since!

They were very wise! Such a useful tool for us all!

I had typing in school, and I will admit I had no idea how useful it would eventually turn out to be. I have to agree that of all the things I had to learn in school, this probably has been the one that stands out as the most relevant at this point, and has stood the test of time.

I am so glad I decided to take that course. Yes, it is just as relevant today as then!

I was smiling as I read this as I’m thinking back to the algebra I never learned. And I have yet to find use for, thank goodness🙂. Typing I learned after high school.

Amazing that that one typing class I took is just as important today as it was back then. Thank you Pat!

I’d gladly participate but I don’t have laptop right now, and I don’t own a phone. So, I just have to wait an extra couple of days.

Muscle memory seems more lasting than factual memory. 😁 I too am grateful for those keyboarding classes!

Thank you, Michele! Being a teacher I am sure you remember the days of typing on purple masters for your classes! That took muscle power!

You are welcome. I actually did not do that. 😆 That was before my teacher time. I imagine that did take some muscle! 💪🏻

Yes, you had to push very hard to push the keys into the paper and into the purple goo on the second page. They put it into a hand cranked duplicating machine and hope you had enough ink on the back for two sets of papers. The fluid used what very strong and cold to the touch! Later we got electric ones that ran themselves. Copy machines were a god-send!

Sounds like loads of work! Teaching already is without that. That is a fresh perspective. Copy machines are helpful as long as they are not jammed or broken, which seemed to be the case most days. Best to plan ahead. I would order large copy jobs to be done through our district office… saved me some time. 😁

I love your poem, Dwight! My own typing skills are deteriorating, since I use my phone’s swipe keyboard for most things nowadays.

Thank you. It seems you are not alone in the switch to new technology!

I learned to type while producing my aunt’s invoices in the late ’50s. I’m still not much better 🙂

Still haven’t reached 60 wpm? Ha ha… me either. I am always backspacing!

Haha I took keyboarding in school. I have to say it is much harder to type on a phone but, its convenient

True indeed. I wasn’t even taught until high school. And you’re right it has been well worth the effort to learn.

I am most grateful I learned typing in high school. Well worth the effort.

Now it’s called keyboarding skills and kids either learn it in elementary school or on their own. I’ve seen some amazing displays of “hunt and peck” technique. I can type 70 words a minute but I still text with one finger!

Amazing. I lose too much time back spacing when my brain turns the same letters around over and over again! I hunt and peck on the phone as well.

Never learnt typing and I do regret it. My husband often makes fun of my lack of skill!
Nice one, Dwight. It has surely stood you in good stead.

Yes! I am so thankful for this, as well! My husband never learned, and is also a writer…but I call him the “fastest hunt-n-pecker in the west,” because those fingers still fly. 😉

Ha! I can’t tell you all the looks and razzing I got for taking typing in high school as a guy. But Lord, I’m sure glad I did – even more so after computers came along. I got up to 50 wpm. Yeah! 😁✨👌👍

Best course we ever took! Who is laughing now!! Sometimes it is best not to give in to peer pressure.

Yes, to be sure! It wasn’t exactly my choice to take the class but I’m sure glad I did. Yes, I have to laugh at TV and movie portrayals of those using the hunt and peck method! That’s when I really laugh and am thankful too!

It’s one of the most valuable things I learned in school. Way back when it was mostly girls who took typing. Thank goodness schools got with the times, at least with keyboarding.

I meant my husband in high school typing class and he had already taken the class and was the teachers pet. he typed my papers. I still find I miss things as much as I “type”.
Great job here Dwight!

How nice! I guess he was your type!! :>) I miss and backspace quite a bit. Thank goodness for spell check and grammer corrections. Thank you, Cindy,!

This is cute, Dwight, but much too humble… if you were only typing and not doing anything else, your writing wouldn’t be nearly so beautiful and engaging to read!
