“You cannot keep birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair”/hat ― Martin Luther
I have an old straw hat that I wear on hot sunny days as I mow the yard. When I am done, I hang it upside down between two shelf braces in my garage. My garage door is often open as I am in and out of the house. Seems my little wren wondered into the garage and found my hat a perfect place to make a nest. Last week when I decided I needed it to mow the yard, I took my hat down and this is what I found. This is the second time I found a nest being made in my hat.

little wren, “Come build your nest!”

It reminds me of my late grandparents, they loved gardening. While they were cleaning up the weeds one sunny morning by their small yard, they noticed a nest in the middle of the Pandan leaves tree (google it up if you wish to know how the tree lookd like) Well.. they found out it was a snake’s nest.

Wow, I did not know snakes had nests. Do you think it ate the birds or eggs and just settled into the nest?

Ohh the snakes do have their nestling grounds, they would lay their eggs in muddy, isolated, messy areas upon the ground. The pandan leaves tree was just right I suppose. It is bushy long leaves, and the height was around 1 1/2 feet.

Did you find another hat or unseat the nest?

No, the nest had to go! My garage was not a place for her to nest!

Aw….I take it there were no eggs in it. Did you relocate it in a tree?
LikeLiked by 1 person
No, no eggs. It was too loosely constructed to move it as a whole nest.

It made a sweet photo, though.

Your hat does seem a perfect fit, if not the best location. I had to remove a nest from the inside of an outdoor umbrella. All that work! Poor little bird. Hopefully it moved on to a more permanent location.

They love the sheltered areas to make their nests. I used to have an outdoor shed that had and extended roof over the door with shelves on each side. The wrens nested in a coil of chicken wire on the shelf. I left them there. The garage was over a hundred degrees today. Not a great place for a nest.

They are incredible and resourceful little creatures. Sometimes they need to try again. That is hot! Stay hydrated!

Oh there is no fruits, we use the leaves to cook Nasi Lemak ( coconut rice) only available in Malaysia & Singapore. We use the leaves to get green coloring, the leaves also can be used to be sewed into small looking boats to put desserts in. The fragrance of the leaves are lovely.

We have a second set of lovey doves that nested in one of our hanging plants. It’s delightful to watch the babies being fed and learning to fly. The cutest part is when the babies coo, it’s like only a half a coo.

Thank you for sharing the story, Dwight. Somehow, it seems like a compliment that the bird thought your hat was a good fit for her nest. 😊

Thank you Merril. It does seem that way. The hat seems like a great place to hide down inside.
