This little box turtle wandered into my yard from the back woods. He looks a little lost. After I took these photos, he slowly made his way back to the deep grass and into the woods.
“Box turtles are North American turtles of the genus Terrapene. Although box turtles are superficially similar to tortoises in terrestrial habits and overall appearance, they are actually members of the American pond turtle family (Emydidae). The 12 taxa which are distinguished in the genus are distributed over six species.” ~bing.com

This turtle reminds me of the time I went to see turtles with my grandpa, that was one good memory.

Box turtles live around my area, too. They often hang out on a log on ponds and streams.

We have them down her is swampy areas. We call them sliders. They are black and line up on the logs. When you come near, they all slide right into the pond.

Your charming post brought back memories. Funny story: my daughter’s pet box turtle wondered off when she was five. The neighbors found it a year later, after we had moved back to AZ from NV. It just so happened, the weekend it was found, we had a friend in NV. He agreed to drive the turtle to AZ. The turtle’s name was Lucky. Lucky he was! He looked a little rough-not sure how he survived in the desert climate. He must have had some adventures! Truthfully, he belonged in the wild, in a more suitable region. That’s my turtle story! Thanks for sharing your post. 🐢

You have mastered them! My daughter and I have talked about a “Lucky” turtle book. Of course, she would be the illustrator. 😊

I got a pet turtle. She is still quite small, still the size of a golf ball. In a tank.

It seems they take years to get very big!

About 10 years ago, I released my turtle into a lake populated with turtles. The turtle was already as big as the one in your post, roughly that size.
