Nature’s Gypsy

This little box turtle wandered into my yard from the back woods. He looks a little lost. After I took these photos, he slowly made his way back to the deep grass and into the woods.

“Box turtles are North American turtles of the genus Terrapene. Although box turtles are superficially similar to tortoises in terrestrial habits and overall appearance, they are actually members of the American pond turtle family (Emydidae). The 12 taxa which are distinguished in the genus are distributed over six species.”

  1. Your charming post brought back memories. Funny story: my daughter’s pet box turtle wondered off when she was five. The neighbors found it a year later, after we had moved back to AZ from NV. It just so happened, the weekend it was found, we had a friend in NV. He agreed to drive the turtle to AZ. The turtle’s name was Lucky. Lucky he was! He looked a little rough-not sure how he survived in the desert climate. He must have had some adventures! Truthfully, he belonged in the wild, in a more suitable region. That’s my turtle story! Thanks for sharing your post. 🐢
