Behind each smile there lies a motive
why those teeth are showing;
Some like Scarecrow Jake don’t have much choice
Their smiles are always showing;
But the ones that irritate me most
are those pasted on fake smiles glowing.
Shown at parties by every host
All the while they’re knowing…
they have to pretend to welcome you
with their big fake smile showing.
“Oh, do come in,” they say
with smiles from ear to ear.
Then they talk when you can’t hear
…after you walk away.
For me, I like them genuine
A smile that is believable;
One you can trust every time
and they never will deceive you.

Sincerity is the best of all. Better be alone with a few sincere friends that be in a huge circle of people who can’t refrain from talking behind my back. It is less toxic, less stressful.
Great poem. 💞

This is so well said! The fake ones deserve a clap 👏…. on their face!

Sometimes I think people wear frozen smiles as armor, but the eyes tell the story. When I think of those kinds of smiles I think of politicians and used car salesmen, both trying to sell junk as gold. Good poem, Dwight.

You are exactly right…. the eyes tell the story. This was just one example of many. Salesmen and politicians are famous for fake smiles. I know yours is genuine!

Fake smiles are in fact threatening, the genuine ones are hard to find, I treasure them too when eventually do. Good one Dwight!

fake smiles are hard to fathom …. I think your neighbour has a serious eating disorder Dwight but I can see he has some handy helpers!

Yes, I told my brother his garden must not be doing too well, as skinny as he is! But he is still smiling! Just like some people we know!

Oh, my! 😮 Feed some food to that guy! 😀 Glad he is protecting himself from the sun with that snazzy hat! 😉
I like the same kind of smiles you do, Dwight! 🙂 A poem that is so true and so relatable!
I think if the mouth-smile is genuine…we will see it in the eyes and in the voice! 🙂
(((HUGS))) 🙂

I agree with you on this. The smile might be wide, but the eyes tell the rest of the story! I love the skeleton guy! My brother found this one for me.

People smiling past you never meaning an authentic connection. Frustration. I think they are always looking for their reflection to admire.

I agree with you, Dwight: can’t stand fake or painted on smiles! Some people complain that I don’t smile enough, but I only smile when I mean it 🙂

Oh, Dwight, we all know it when we see them, and that makes me for one all the more awkward and UN-glib, the small talk stuck in my craw choking me. Okay, it’s not that bad, except car salesmen! Creepy.

I understand completely. And with car salesman the smile gets all twisted out of shape if you try to leave without them making a sale!

Definitely!Faking a smile,or a praise,or appreciation just bugs a person out,for it’s more like they’re insulting you behind your back.Great poem,conveying this message! 😀

There are smiles that wrap us in warm welcome …. and then there are the fake smiles, drawn from an empty well. I like your thoughts, Dwight.
