Naturally, we view relationships through our own eyes
taking in all that we enjoy // perceiving what will be
Yet, as relationship expectations grow, the delusion increases
Wishful thinking, full of wants and needs draws us
to assumptions of crashing cataracts… leaving us dashed…
often broken on the rocks of unfulfilled expectations…
as life roars on around us // carrying away our dreams
*
Co-dependence is a quicksand of mutual expectations
turning a loving relationship into sinking turmoil
sucked under by our own needs and desires
to a point of suffocation

Wonderfully put and sadly true..I love this closing line, “sucked under by our own needs and desires to a point of suffocation”

Wonderful analogy, Dwight. If you can get past the closing line it’ll be saved.

Mr. Roth, I would like to thank you for writing such a great post. Bringing awareness to what co-dependency can really do. My mother was a classic textbook co-dependent. I think it’s deeply misunderstood and appreciate you writing this so much!

Thank you very much Eleanor. It is very easy to become co-dependent in any relationship. Making assumptions always seems to end badly. I really appreciate your affirming comment.

A very insightful poem about a trap that all too many people fall into.

It does happen sometimes without even realizing. It can be very difficult to move beyond it to a new level of relating.

Dwight,
Quicksands indeed! Very insightful. I can’t think of a better metaphor. Yet in such relationships “neediness” overwhelms and suffocates. Is it insecurity? Selfishness? Certainly great expectations.

I think expectations seem the outweigh the inherent realities of maintaining a relationship without stepping into life’s unavoidable pools of quicksand, every now and then ..

You are right. We do need some expectations, but with some give and take to make them work! Thanks Ivor.

Being we are all selfish by nature, it does create a problem when trying to get along with others. Thank you. I am so glad it connected with you.

Thank you Carolyn. I have had a lot of experience with this since it tend to have a co-dependent personality. It is hard to learn to be an independent person.

Dwight, a brilliantly written poem describing my parents’ miserable marriage…and many other marriages, too, I am sure! Wonderful insights, meaningfully expressed. ❤
