There you are every morning at my perch
Drinking from my fermented fountain
Addicted to the sour nectar
All of your iridescence shimmering in the sunlight
Pausing now and then to look at me
As I make my morning coffee
Movement in the shadows
Not sure what to make of me
The sunlight blinding your view
Making it difficult to see the details
Yet you come back every day
Finding nourishment and strength
In the liquid of life that sustains you
Hoping to get your fill
Before another drives you away
Claiming it to be theirs alone
Sort of like my view of God…
Moving in the shadows of my life
Providing sustaining strength and hope
Not exactly sure what I am seeing
Everyone thinking they alone have it right
Blinded by the light of Grace

A wonderful poem, Dwight! I love the ending lines. We had two feeders and there was one hummingbird bird that was a bully and never let any of the others feed. If they went to the other feeder he’d follow and chase them. I don’t know how the guy wasn’t exhausted.

They do seem to be very territorial! Thank you for you comment Elle! I am glad you liked it!

I really like the shift into metaphor. My husband saw our first hummingbird of the season. They seem to wait until the Rose of Sharon bush is blooming.

I’m glad you have regular visitors of the hummingbirds. They are lovely. I have a family of three here. The baby that was born in my garden stays all the time. The mama and the brother come during the day to play with him. Lovely poem and photos, Dwight.

A fine analogy. “Everyone thinking they alone have it right” is so telling

Lovely poem, Dwight! We have two feeders and the hummingbirds go from one to the other. The bigger hummingbird is always chasing the smaller ones off the feeder.

I guess they get used to seeing me inside the window and know I am not a threat to them. They are so beatuiful.
