Come Along and Ride this Train… (travel NC) Great Smoky Mountain Railroad

Today, I am doing a photo montage of a wonderful trip we took to the small town of Bryson City, in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. Train rides into the Nantahala Gorge are available on reservation. There are several levels from an open car, to an vintage dining car with a full meal served.

The ride is about two hours long, with a lay over of about forty five minutes at the White Water Center, where they have competitions and train for the Olympics. You ride along beautiful Lake Fontaine as it winds its way into the gorge. For someone looking for a different vacation than usual, this is a wonderful spot to visit.

  1. A beautiful train ride on a very scenic route Dwight, I think I read about this route in some book. Thanks for the beautiful visuals which allowed to experience the ride virtually. The open car looks fascinating, as does the dining car – I think that’s where your photo is taken? You look so happy and justifiably so.
I love eating in a train, especially one going through such beautiful lands. It does wonders to my appetite, and I frequently overeat at such times πŸ˜‡ maybe you did too 😊?

  2. WOW Dwight, what an adventure and sweet haiku. You and Ruth look like you’re reversing time…ageless. I’ve never visited there, but it sounds like something to put on my to-do list! Awesome!!! πŸš…πŸš†πŸšž

  4. Dwight, I love train rides; especially through the mountains and by rivers. Funny snd ironic story to share~my boys and I were on that river in 2003 (class 3~that was enough!) and low and behold, we saw Willie Nelson (he was performing at a Casino that weekend and he had some special protection as he paddles around). The boys were mortified I was singing his songs. I’ve never been on that train. But enjoy the Ozark Moubtains on our train here in Branson (took my son, his wife, and grandson on their visit in May). I’ve also enjoyed the Durango-Silverton train several times. I’d love to ride the Rocky Mountaineer to the Canadian Rockies. Hence, their catalogue which sits in my reading bucket list basket. Lovely pictures of the scenery and you both!
