Today, I am doing a photo montage of a wonderful trip we took to the small town of Bryson City, in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. Train rides into the Nantahala Gorge are available on reservation. There are several levels from an open car, to an vintage dining car with a full meal served.
The ride is about two hours long, with a lay over of about forty five minutes at the White Water Center, where they have competitions and train for the Olympics. You ride along beautiful Lake Fontaine as it winds its way into the gorge. For someone looking for a different vacation than usual, this is a wonderful spot to visit.

I’ve heard of this, but so far been unable to take advantage of it, now I want to even more.

I do too! This one was a diesel (sadly for me) but still a very run ride.

What a wonderful way to enjoy a ride, along such a beautiful scenic route. A lovely haiku so fitting. Thank you for sharing the ride. This was the last steam train I rode https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mXhp-ZlyWFc
I just may have to ride the one you took, a bucket list add on. ππ

A beautiful train ride on a very scenic route Dwight, I think I read about this route in some book. Thanks for the beautiful visuals which allowed to experience the ride virtually. The open car looks fascinating, as does the dining car – I think that’s where your photo is taken? You look so happy and justifiably so.
I love eating in a train, especially one going through such beautiful lands. It does wonders to my appetite, and I frequently overeat at such times π maybe you did too π?

It is a wonderful and different kind of journey. I loved it as you can see. Yes we had dinner in the dinning car. It was delicious. I am glad you enjoyed my view in photos. Thank you so much!

WOW Dwight, what an adventure and sweet haiku. You and Ruth look like you’re reversing time…ageless. I’ve never visited there, but it sounds like something to put on my to-do list! Awesome!!! π ππ

I don’t travel much anymore but enjoyed your post. I have traveled on trains and especially enjoyed the narrow-gauge railroad through the original oilfield in Titusville, PA with my mother years ago.

I understand. I am getting more that way myself. Sounds like an interesting ride. Trains have always fascinated me.

Dwight, I love train rides; especially through the mountains and by rivers. Funny snd ironic story to share~my boys and I were on that river in 2003 (class 3~that was enough!) and low and behold, we saw Willie Nelson (he was performing at a Casino that weekend and he had some special protection as he paddles around). The boys were mortified I was singing his songs. Iβve never been on that train. But enjoy the Ozark Moubtains on our train here in Branson (took my son, his wife, and grandson on their visit in May). Iβve also enjoyed the Durango-Silverton train several times. Iβd love to ride the Rocky Mountaineer to the Canadian Rockies. Hence, their catalogue which sits in my reading bucket list basket. Lovely pictures of the scenery and you both!

Thanks for sharing this interesting response. Sounds like everyone had a great time. The old steam trains are my favorites, but this was a really nice ride. I would like to take the train from Calgary,
AB to Vancouver, BC Canada, through the Canadian Rockies. Thank you so much. Seeing Willie would be a great one.

Thank you! I would have never thought about the rafting trip and Willie as a response to a post! But you hit all the right memories square on the head! Yes, I would like to do that tour as well. I have a friend in Banff and would like to spend time there. Iβm going to Fairbanks in September. Iβd give anything to drive it; I sold the RV in December for my little house. But one day Iβll travel it and see British Columbia. Family and friends say itβs the most beautiful to see.

I do love steam trains too; any steam engine actually. We have a steam train that runs at Silver Dollar City, a theme park near me. I always ride it. π
