My Verse

Some may ask the reason of existence

This short lived life…

Here today // gone tomorrow

Of what value is my being

Why do I write poetry

Paint pictures with words

Or with a brush

I write because

I am a member of the human race

I write because I am alive

Full of passion and urgency

Finding connection

Creating purpose

***

We are all part of the play of life

“…The powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse…

What will your verse be?”

Today at d’Verse, Mish asked us to choose a favorite line from a movie and write it into a poem. I chose a line Robin Williams tells his class in the movie, Dead Poets Society. “…The powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse…What will your verse be?”

  1. I’m so thrilled that you pulled a quote out of the video. At least I know somebody watched it! 😉
Perfectly said. This is so true….”I write because I am alive”. We are blessed with the ability to add a verse!

    • That was such a great movie! I loved it. The clip brought it all back to me. There is so much wisdom in those lines. Thank you for inspiring me with it. I appreciate your kind words. Great prompt.

  2. Oh gosh! This is spectacular, Dwight!
Your painting, your poem and it’s powerful important message, and the quote you based it on….all wonderful! (One of our families fave movies.)
PLUS…your “verse” inspires, encourages, expresses what others feel and cannot express, provokes good thinking, ETC! So keep writing! 🙂

  3. Your painting is stunning, a candidate for a prompt in itself. I love poems about poets, about writing, the whys and ways. I I love movies about writers.

  4. One of my favorite movies – starring one of my favorite actors. My verse is “Nothing is too much to hope for when His power is at work in us.” Keep hope alive … and play your part with gusto!! ❤

  5. I like the sentiment, but only some members of the human race can write creatively. For others it can be a genuine struggle. For those of us who want to exercise the privilege – I say it should not be denied because it is worth trying to connect with other humans in any way we are good at.

  6. “I write because I am a member of the human race. I write because I’m alive.” Powerful words. I can tell that your poetry truly comes from the heart. This was also great encouragement for an aspiring writer like me. I’m only young, but I hope that my verse will be unique and make a difference one day.

  8. I loved this post and a huge fan of Robin Williams🌺 I always remember a quote he said” that there was nothing worse than feeling alone when you have somebody at your side”. Peehaps not the happiest of quotes but it resonated with me so much. So in your answer to why.
I just want to say that when I write it feels purposeful, I feel excited inside, like I have finally found my voice, and am able to express myself, like I have never been able to before, the confidence it gives me I never doubt or judge my poems because they are my thoughts and feelings, the same way when I read others, writing or poetry it feels all so perfectly right.💙
