Back in 2013, I started painting regularly. I watched Bob Ross on PBS every day while I ate my lunch. I was in awe of the way he made a canvas pop in just a half an hour show. I then went out in my garage and tried to replicate what I saw him do. Though I never really was able to master the paint brush like he did, I learned enough to create my own style of painting. I loved experimenting with paint and colors to see what I could come up with. This is one of those paintings. I was pleasantly surprised that some people actually enjoyed my work. Painting was as almost as gratifying as writing poetry!!
An amature’s attempt
Texture and imperfection
Flaws some might feel
detract from the value
But,
Beauty is found
in the eye of the beholder
Where flaws add character
and uniqueness is perfection

I love this!

Thank you Miriam! Yes it really does. It is so inspiring… except when I can’t get it right at the end of the painting. Poetry is much easier to do!!

This is such a testiment to trying new things, enjoying the process and being surprised at how much we improve. Magic is born in this place. Your poem and pictures are proff of that We have to start somewhere Dwight! ❣️❣️

Yes, it all begins with an idea/inspiration and then figuring out how to make it happen! The story of my life! :>) Thank you Cindy

Wonderful, Dwight. Love the fiesta style plate. One of my best friends starting painting last year, after retiring from teaching. She has amassed an impressive body of work and she improves every week. Bonus… it gave her a creative outlet during the pandemic. I am beyond inspired by people who find their creative gifts after giving so much of themselves to others through the years. Bravo to you!

Thank you Michele! Painting has been a very rewarding outlet for me during retirement. I have accumulated quite a few myself. I am taking a hiatus from painting for awhile this summer. I need a break. I needed the space in my garage.

You’re like my husband. He’s taught himself so many things through sheer determination and creative inspiration. Kudos to you for creating such beauty ….

I so love your poem because you have explained beautifully what attracts us to others, it isn’t a beauty but that one little something, like a dimple, a line of the mouth, not objectively perfect, but irresistible to us. The paintings are not bad either. Only joking! They are great.

Your poem reminds me of a lecture from college that put forth the idea that if the art object is perfect, it can’t be art because art comes from human imperfection.

Art is never formal, it comes from within, just like the art of poetry or music, these are wonderful pieces Dwight.

I love that waterfall. Is that the one where you turned it upsidedown and finished it that way? Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder… and sometimes we have to be willing to look with a different perspective in mind to see the beauty when it is full of “flaws.” In them may be the most beauty of all!!

No that was a mountain straight down drop! This was one of my best Bob Ross impressions. It hangs over my bed and I wake up to it every morning! Thank you Jan!
