During this time of Covid-19, I have had my down times just like many of you. But, what I find helps more than anything else is to create purpose in my life. Being isolated gives me much time for creativity. It lifts my spirit and brings me joy. This past year I have self-published a hundred page book of poems I have written for my daily blog on Word Press. I also wrote and illustrated a children’s book about Rocky the Owl, and passed it out to friends who have little ones. Now that the days are warmer, I have been painting again. There is not time to sit and wait for the grim reaper. There are things to do that take my mind of the sand in the hour glass!
The sand in the hour glass runs faster at the end
I feel it shifting and settling into that narrow space
People for centuries tried to flip the glass to no avail
In the span of time and antiquity
our few minutes goes quickly
So make them count // those last few grains
settling into the final drop // becoming sand once more
Tell your stories // write your poems // sing your songs
Fill your days with creativity // joy // and wonder
For the sand in the hour glass runs faster at the end
This is a painting I finished last week of the City View Dairy Farms in the community where I grew up in Pennsylvania. I posted it on the community Facebook page where it was appreciated with hundreds of likes and comments and memories from people who no longer live there, but have great memories of getting milk there. It gave me great joy to see so many find it meaningful.
I so agree about the sand in the hourglass. I ,too, can feel it speeding up more and more at this stage and age of life. And it becomes even more precious…grain by grain. I also write and paint, and have even begun voice lessons….just because! Life is so very brief and precious. Let us live it being as present as we can for as many moments as we can. Thank you for your lovely post.

Dwight, Your lovely poem is very relatable! Your message is so applicable to our times. Retirees feel the sand rushing through the hourglass. So do students who are losing big chunks of their education experience. I think you are incredibly positive and productive, spreading joy with your heartfelt poems, travel and wildlife photographs, and nostalgic paintings. Your handyman skills are also impressive. ā¤
May the joy you give to others come back to you. Have a great week! š

Thank you Cheryl! We must move beyond the fear of the moment and live with care and common sense. All the things I do give me great joy and satisfaction. And I can share what I do from a distance as well! Thank so much!

So true, {{{Dwight}}} – the sand runs faster at the end… and that comes sooner for some than others. Today my “favorite student” Yu Stiles (kindergarten 1962) went home with Hospice care. His stage 4 or 5 cancer cannot be eradicated, evidently. I can’t wrap my head around that. I pray for God’s miracle. Yes, “the sand in the hour glass runs faster at the end” … and we never know when that end will be. Sobering, isn’t it?

I’m sorry to hear about your student’s illness. Facing our own mortality is indeed sobering.

Yes, very sobering as we see so many people dying! But to live in fear is not way to live! We mush use common sense and weigh our choices.

For sure… weigh our choices and BEE wise!! Even then, there is no guarantee… but fear is not an option. Thanks, {{{Dwight}}}<3

It is very unsettling to see people we know pass on from Covid, especially when they are younger than we are. So sorry to hear about your former student! It makes us all stop and think about the precious time we have left!

Yes, it does cause us to ponder our own mortality. Ty’s death is being caused by cancer, not COVID-19. A painful ending … morphine every 4 hours. Can’t eat or drink. In ans out of consciousness. Oh, my heart aches for him and his dear wife. Lord, take me in a peaceful sleep when I have just celebrated my 100th… We can dream, can’t we? Lord, keep me healthy! I pray… you, too {{{Dwight}}} ā¤

Yes young Dwight, we must make the most of our time here !!
“We are a finite speck of the infinite
Our time is but a spark of light
Our existence is the life of a micro battery
Just an electron of the universe’s hatchery”

A poignant meditation on our fleeting time on earth. I think of my kids and my own childhood and how that portion of life seems endless. Iām glad they have that. I love the story behind the painting!

What a positive post, Dwight. Life is too short to waste one minute of it and when I feel things are not going to my liking, I find things to keep me busy. It is therapeutic for me to be busy. Your painting is delightful and keep on keeping on.
