Violent Ideology

When ideology supersedes the common good

the cause becomes a righteous one;

Rhetoric gets substituted for truth

and action replaces common sense.

*

Trying to guard our constitutional rights

while neglecting our social contract…

that all men are created equal”…

is a failure of moral responsibility.

*

If we are to survive as a country

we must show one another

respect and dignity

in the face of disagreement.

*

Without cooperation and compromise

our dreams get squelched by violence

as we implode on ourselves…

knowing WE are right!

Painting: Dwight L. Roth

My poem today was inspired by thoughts from John Paul Lederach’s Saturday news letter , The Pause.

  1. I’m afraid the impetuous and arrogantly inciteful ways of the irresponsible President, is mainly to blame for these terrible misdemeanors against the democrtic system….. his lack of grace in accepting defeat, has been a big contributing factor, … .his actions are a sad reflection/indictment of how an outgoing President should behave…🥵

  2. Dwight, so true and so beautifully expressed! I hope things are resolved without further violence and loss of life. Your painting evokes the tension and the suspense I feel, hoping there is not another shoe to drop!
Soon we can begin the task of uniting to rebuild our democracy. 🙂

  3. Once upon a time, the same old tale in the ignorant, he believes himself wise and capable of judging what is different, thus becoming intransigent with his words and more and more fanatic with his actions, sheltered among the blind herd that supports him. The wise man is aware of his ignorance, and therefore, he is capable of compromising with the fanatic and seeking the common good through the exercise of freedom and respect.

    • This kind of thing has been going on for generations. It is interesting to me that people are drawn to the radical and blindly follow. It happens in politics and it happens in religion. We all choose what we want to hear and believe!
Thank you very much for you comments!

  4. Dwight, I love your painting. It so strongly expresses what happens in your country just now.
Seeing it from outside it seems unbelievable and something that could not happen in a civilised and democratic country. May it be a signal to turn to care and peace in our dealings witheach other.
