Remember the days
when vacations were fun
Time off work
and we were on the run
Traveling as far as
our imaginations could reach
To the mountains
ride the train
and fun times at the beach
Coming home exhausted
and ready for a rest
Back to work on Monday
Vacations were the best!
I took this photo in 1976, when one of my students, Sharon Ulrich, won the My America contest for the state of Virginia. It included a week long trip across the state of Pennsylvania, stopping to visit all the historic sites. It included her parents and her teacher (me) and winner representatives for each state. By the time we got to Lancaster County, to ride the Strasburg Railroad, many of the folks were worn out and needed a rest… as you can see in the photo!
I love this snapshot from your history!

So you were a history teacher? And an inspirational one to boot. 🙂

Yes and no! 4th grade Virginia History!! Some students just have what it takes. Sort of like your kids… :>)

Not buying it. A good teacher teaches incalculably more than his or her subject, as you know. 😉

Thank you Dora… that is very kind of you to say so. This little girl was a gem… she is not a professor in a university in Iowa!

Was it in Harrisonburg, VA?

I went to elementary school briefly in Harrisonburg in ‘69. Still remember my teacher: Miss Arrington! 😀

Dwight, charming photo, and meaningful poem with its memories of yesteryear. When I was in seventh grade, we had a field trip to Zoorama that used to be in New Market, Virginia. I was wearing my Sunday dress. My friends and I took it upon ourselves to ride the donkeys! I don’t think our initiative was appreciated. 🙂
Years later, I took my sixth-grade class to the Miccosukee Reservation where they were selling drinks on the honor system. The student I had put in charge of collecting money gave $100 worth of drinks away. Later, my principal got a call from the reservation… Karma! 🙂
Thank you, Dwight, for reminding me of these field trips! ❤

They were the best! I remember taking my class to the New Market Battle Field and to Monticello! Great trips. So, who paid for the drinks!

I told my wonderful principal that I was sorry I had “put the fox in charge of the henhouse.” The school repaid the reservation for the drinks! 🙂 New Market Battlefield and Monticello are both awesome! Your students must have had a blast on those trips as well as learning a lot, Dwight!

Just any story about a railroad gets me in, but what a delight this must have been to all be recognised in this way and to enjoy the fruit of mentoring.
