Squirrel hunting
Like bringing jerky for supper
Tough to chew on
Today at d’Verse, Sarah gave us a selection of seven different lines from one of her favorite books and asked us to choose one and write a poem about it. These lines come from “Surfacing” by Kathleen Jamie.
I know there is very little meat on a squirrel so I wrote my poem accordingly.

What an odd posture for Mr. Squirrel, like a little supplicant. A friend of mine from school used to hunt squirrels for his mother to make squirrel stew. We neighborhood kids were horrified.

Ha Ha! I can imagine! This is my entitled squirrel, or so he thought till he got caught and transferred to a new lot!

Jerky I know! So I get what you mean by ‘tough to chew on’. 🙂 Are squirrels actually being eaten?

Very rarely! This was one of the suggested prompts. Not much meat on a squirrel! :>)

Oh, I remember my grandfather bringing squirrel home for grandmother to ‘fry up.’ To this day, the thought makes me cringe. However your poem is wonderful!

lol I didn’t think that was the case! No idea why people like jerky … squirrel beef or otherwise

Oh no! I know people do eat squirrels, but I can’t say I fancy it. I also thought of the way squirrels are constantly gnawing on nuts – so i first read it as cute, and then as “ugh???”. Clever.

Thank you! I think I remember my mom cooking one many many years ago. It was pretty tough! Thanks Sarah

According to a Chinese lady I once met, they are good on the barbecue! But I couldn’t vouch for that, cute little critters would be hard to eat…

Only tough muscle! Not much fat on a squirrel!

Ha Ha! When he chews on my vinyl windows and climbs on my roof to get the bird seed he does not conjure up much love. Thanks Rob. I guess if you were hungry and desperate anything can become food!

I very much like the squirrel doing the hunting. I do, however, remember my mother’s brothers going hunting in the woods and bringing home squirrel which grandma fried up for breakfast, Today I would be horrified, then it was simply a matter of fact—hunters brought home the food!

Photo wonderful! My squirrels in their wildlife paradise would be horrified. Nuts? Yesterday, they had for breakfast whole Christmas pudding. So there!

Such a special photo, a squirrel sitting in that posture! However, such a small piece of food for such a big guy. My favorite memory of a squirrel is when one jumped out of a tree. I was astounded to hear the “thud” and the realization that squirrels jump from heights! 🙂

Thank you very much! That is one fat squirrel. He loved my sunflower seeds in the bird feeder! What a funny surprise for you.

Haha, the picture actually appeared in my dream last night yet the squirrel was fatter and he was holding a larger nut. Funny! Thank you for sharing, have a good day. 🙂

Nice post!
We let squirrels roam around in our garden freely like in a sanctuary. We never hurt them.

They roam freely here as well. When we get too many I move them to a different location where they can run free and not bother anyone! Thanks for your comment!
