This week I finished my eighth poetry book and had it printed. I find self-publishing works very well for me. Some think that by getting a book published, it is going sell and make them some money. Sadly this is often not the case. E-books on Amazon are made available on Kindle for free, but unless you pay them, they never see the light of day; unless someone specifically looks for your books.
Having learned that early on, I decided I was not going to play the “send off and get rejected” game. I publish my own books. I realize that really only immediate family and friends care about my writing, so I publish and give to family and sell a few at cost. It makes me feel good and I don’t have to worry about the competition.
I write my poems on Word and then load all of them onto one file. I make a title page and contents and design a cover page. When all this is edited, I change it to a pdf. file and take it to Office Max/Depot. By getting at least twenty books printed and using their coupons, I can usually print for under ten dollars each! The more you get the cheaper they become. They do spiral bindings and clear plastic covers also. I get them half size of the original 8.5 x 11, which makes a little wider top and bottom margins, but that is fine with me. You can see how well they turn out.
Give it a try. It is very rewarding not have to fight the competition. I do load some of my books on Kindle for those who are too far away to send a book to. I love it. You can find them under my name on Amazon.com.

Self-publishing is your way to leave your scratch on time!
I dedicated this book to all my friends at the d’Verse Poets Pub for all their encouragement and help with increasing my knowledge of poetry.
It’s great that you’ve found a way to share your poetry that works well for you!

Striking post. I’m searching the internet for possibilities to have the novel I’m writing printed and perhaps distributed. There are several options. I find it does pay to look around a bit and read experiences from users. So your words are right in time. 🙂

Thank you Peter! I am not sure how it would be to self publish a Novel! You might want that to get to a broader audience! Thank you for your kind words.

Awesome Dwight, thanks for sharing a bit about your self-publishing journey. I have self-published two books and two e-books through KDP/Amazon this year. I am fortunate (beyond words) to have an artist daughter who has collaborated with me, adding her art. It has been a labor of love and a creative outlet during this upside down year. 💗

Thank you for your great comments. It is really a great way to have one’s work in print. This was the cheapest one yet I had 35 done for under $200. Hope you have great success with yours as well.

I’ve produced 20 different Tullawalla booklets in the series, and I’ve no idea how many I have printed here at home… ??.. 100’s ..??… I’ve been very lucky to have Fae Corps Publishing supporting my book, It’s going to be quite a challenge for me, and something completely different. ..

It is so much easier to get them published and bound at the Office Max. Do you have a office supply store similar in Australia?

If you keep a separate file and save your posts individually and then also put it in the ongoing file. It saves going back later to copy and paste.

That’s what I do! I’m a bit “old school” in which I want to write it in Word. And copy and paste is what I do. I have been doing that for some years so I could send others my writings (particularly my family ;-). I love being able to edit and write “freely” on Word; whereas in writing on WP, the format and editing are not as user friendly. It’s been a shift for me as I only began blogging in January and I’ve always kept journals and documents on file in Word.

I love the cover design and the binding. I am intrigued by the type of paper you’ve printed your poems on inside. Is it lined or just plain blank? Anyway, thanks for sharing the information.Makes it seem possible to publish a book.
LikeLiked by 4 people
The inside is plain white 20# paper. If you can get your book onto a pdf. file they can print it! I always do the cover on a separate file and use a heavier paper in a pastel color so the Black and White Photo shows up.

No, if you do it yourself you don’t need one. If you load it on Amazon Kindle they will give you their number. But for your personal us… no you don’t need on. I do state that it is copy-writed material and needs permission to be copied.

Quite the post. Thank you for going out to publish it yourself. Self Publishing houses work differently in India. They take money from writers for there work to be published and rip a percentage of royalty to the writer. For a long time I have been considering on getting my work published but there is always a thought at the back what if.
You did a great job publishing it yourself.

Do you have office supply stores that do printing for businesses and make up brochures etc. They could print a book for you and put on a cover. Skip the self publisher! Do it yourself.

Hey there! It’s amazing you’ve got so much writing under your belt and published!
I work in a print shop and was curious- why coil bind? They have actual book binds that should be about the same price if not cheaper.
Either way, keep kicking ass!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Office Max did not offer the solid bindings. I really like the coil binding. It lets the book open and is much more readable than trying to flatten the pages back and then the stay that way! Also it is so simple to do and looks great to me!
LikeLiked by 1 person
I understand that. Have you thought about wir-o then? It actually lays flatter than the coils and makes sure the pages don’t lift. It’s what people use for portfolios.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I am not familiar with that!

Try googling it! I took a photo but can’t share it. I found a couple comparisons and the wire-o has a nicer finish. I checked and my local staples offers it so yours might too.

I see what you are talking about. It is a double wire instead of one solid coil.

What kind of cost is printing a B & W book of 100 pages and 25 copies at a print shop?
LikeLike
For mine personally it’s $20 before tax to print 100 pages, then if you come on Friday we have a deal so it’s only $125 to make copies of the remaining 24 books. If you don’t come on Friday it would be roughly $500 for 25 all BW 100 page books. Before tax and binding.

I get mine done for $10 or less each! With coupons and discounts it goes even less!

I don’t blame you, I work for a small company in a very big city so $$$! Still ask about the wire-o next time (:

This sounds like an amazing option. So you just have to get it ready to print and go to office max?

Yes, you do all the editing and when you get it exactly like you want it you load it on a pdf. file so nothing will change and tell them to print it in half size. The spiral binding is extra, but worth the difference to me. Get at least 20 or more for their best prices.
