Provides food for all of us
Natures golden grain
Wheat fields make way for houses
Farmers gone // who feeds us then?
Today at d’Verse, we are writing a poem on the prompt Wheat. Wheat is essential to life on earth, providing food for millions of people. The wheat field above is adjacent to the development where I live. This past year construction of a new housing development has started on our side of the highway. The county has rezoned the big wheat field across the road for housing as well. Who will feed us when farmers have all sold out to developers! We just assume bread will always be on the grocery shelves.

So, SO true. This is brilliant, Dwight. We get so much from farmers, it’s easy to forget how essential they are. It’s always the things we take for granted, no?

this is my fear also Dwight as I see ‘progress’ taking over so much farmland … who will feed us?

so true, I’ve been visiting Nepal for decades and the agricultural land has shrunk enormously over the years … trekking you recall the fields you walked around but now it’s all buildings … it’s everywhere!

As the population increases it is inevitable!

no after the 2015 earthquake many survivors from remote regions decided to move toward the capital, too fearful to rebuild in their areas again … so more migration than increase !
That also means those remote fields are not being planted anymore as farmers adapt to suburban lifestyles ..

Wheat is not my favourite topic and it’s essential to keep it OUT of my life. I’m anaphylactic to wheat even to buckwheat. Everything has wheat or glucose from wheat in it these days. I’m gluten free but it’s the wheat that kills.
When I planned my USA trip in 2008, I needed to change the itinerary because of wheat harvesting in OHIO . Yes, airborne/smell would probably kill me. I don’t think anyone would like my poem if I wrote one about wheat. 😉

That is very sad to hear that wheat is bad for you. It must be a very big challenge to try to avoid it in foods. So sorry to hear that. Thank you for sharing.

I learn to live with it. Eating out has it’s challenges but we found a few places in our new city. Being invited to friends houses for a meal is the most awkward. A few people will work through a menu with me others just find it to difficult.

I live in the country and know how hard farmers work. And are so taken for granted. Yes… what will we do when the farmers are gone?

My father was a man of the soil. It pained him so to see fertile farm land turn into highways and subdivisions. He would sigh lustily and say “One day the world will all be black top!”

Ah….you’ve hit on a problem…..our rural fields being cemented over. The loss of our nurturing earth becoming houses and highways. Progress? hmmmmm…….

This post is so eye-opening. We actually need to value our farms and our farmers more. Maybe people think houses are better on that land than wheat, or maybe they just could not find land elsewhere, so they bought the farmer’s land. We still have hope with the rise of vertical farming. Vertical farming does not need soil, it just needs water and nutrients, that could be the new way of doing things. This post from you reminded me of a certain Bible verse,
The Bible says in Zechariah 10:1
“Ask rain from the Lord in the season of the spring rain, from the Lord who makes the storm clouds, and he will give them showers of rain, to everyone the vegetation in the field”.
God knows that we need to eat, it might happen in a different form than we expect, but he will provide what we need for sustenance when we ask. God is great, and it is so easy to see him in anything, because he is the author of everything.
