Frequent Flyer

You come to drink sweet and fermentation

from my magical striped balloon of glass

I watch you zipping through tint refraction

Curiously watching me with each new pass

Your tiny micro chip of a frame stops

And through the straw you draw sweet nourishment

Deeply imbibing then back to tree tops

Pausing on a branch // moment of contentment

Perched among the willows // you disappear

Blending in to the foliage like a leaf

In an instant you suddenly appear

Looking for me // like I was the big chief

As I make my sandwich and spread my bread

You land and draw in sweet nectar instead

Today at d’Verse, Linda asked us to write a poem about flying. Since I have been watching my hummingbird coming back and forth to my feeder, I attempted to write a sonnet about the hummingbird.

  1. I’ve got hummingbirds in my garden . They will come there every evening . Each will play . I used to watch them with curiosity . How lovely they are . And I loved this post . Happy blogging Dwight πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

  2. The feeder is beautiful and colourful, Dwight, a β€˜magical striped balloon of glass’; I would love to land on it if I were a bird. Is it just for hummingbirds or do other birds use it too? Your poem is also delightful; I love the lines:
β€˜I watch you zipping through tint refraction’
and the scene of human/bird companionship and contentment in the final lines.

    • Thank you for your kind assessment Kim. We really do live in great harmony. I enjoy them immensely! The bees love the feeder, but the birds have no way to get to the sugar water. I have other feeders for them!

How nice to discover an affiliation of friendship forming with a regular visitor. They can be most mesmerizing, Dwight!

    • They are wonderful creatures. And, they are very curious about what is going on inside as well. I have doves that sit on the deck rail and watch us move about inside the house!

    • Thank you Glenn! I am amazed at the feedback. I really apppreciate your kind affirmation as well. I love my humming bird. Saw the male only a couple of times, but she come back and forth all day long. Makes me wonder if there are babies somewhere close by!
