The thrill of the imagination
Takes us places we can never go
Beyond this earthly home
Out into the solar system
Wrapping our minds around the
Concept of a galaxy in a world far far away
Imagine going into the depths of the earth
“All the way to China,” as we used to say
…Our way of saying very deep
Imagine riding with Voyager
As it continues to sail out into the universe
Beyond our solar system to worlds unknown
Having paid its dues in 2012 sailing on
Singing, “I’ll fly away oh glory, I’ll fly away!”
Who are the imagineers of the present
With visions beyond this realm
Pushing the outer limits in ways yet to be
Not content to live in Earth’s isolation
Rather seeking ways to imagine
The reality of a Star Trek generation
That will stretch our imaginations even more
Painting “Earth Rise” – Dwight L. Roth

I remember as a child trying to dig to china. I got about a foot down, if that, before I got tired of it.

A lot further down than you thought! You made me smile!

Oh, my goodness! My little brother and I attempted time and time again to dig to China.

Ha Ha, I see you didn’t make it!!

No, we didn’t. I think it was my brother who figured out that it was a geologic impossibility, he being of a more scientific bent than I.

Where would we be without our imagineers, the architects of new possibilities?

Yes, just look at the Sydney Opera House for example!

I smiled as I read your poem, since I chose to pen a tongue-in-cheek poem inspired by reading about NASA’s Mars Program. Ah, yes, the last frontier, and those who wish to conquer it. First we need to figure out how to manage this one!

Isn’t that the truth! Maybe we could ship some of them on to fight it out on Mars!! Thank you, I look forward to reading you poem as well.

As a hard core fan of both STAR TREK and COSMOS, this poem really resonates with me. Still it’s hard to imagine a billion billion solar systems; kind of puts things in perspective.

Thanks Glenn. It becomes overwhelming if one spends too much time overthinking it!

I really love your painting, care to say what medium you used? And your words are particularly apt, as I’m in the middle of a 5-novel sci-fi collection by Ursula LeGuin. The thrill of the imagination is so powerful!

Thank you so much Victoria! The painting is done in acrylics. I have done some oils, but went back to acrylics. They are easier to work with and dry much faster. Your stories sound exciting

Great childhood imaginations maybe don’t always think alike! We used to dig to ‘down under’ Australia. The Voyager has a sad twist of lost discovery and the thrill there was of space and beyond!

Thank you so much! Glad it connected with you. Where does one dig to in Australia? Perhaps Canada?

You know I forgot to ask some Aussie friends when they worked in London. They all went home to have their kids there and flew!

Space is overwhelming, hard to even comprehend….at least for my brain. Imagination…hmm…at least I have control of it. Or do I? haha
Nice one, Dwight. Thanks for sharing your artwork as well.

Perfect pairing of painting with poem. I see your poem as prophecy rather than an act of imagination – look how much has come true already – most of it predicted decades ago by those with eyes to see.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful observations. Yes, I guess it could be seen that way. I appreciate your comments.
