Interesting how our gods all fall to pieces
when crisis comes knocking at our door.
Life in disarray lies before us
with no way of putting it back together again.
Looking into the eyes of hopelessness
shocks us into reality.
Invincible has no definition in our world;
We all sit on the wall waiting to fall.
Interesting how our gods fall to the floor
When crisis comes knock knocking at our door.
Inspired by a poem I read by Paul Vincent Cannon – Birthed by Silence
Birthed By Silence – a poem by Paul Vincent Cannon
Posting on d’Verse Poets Pub open link night! Frank asked us to put a couplet at the end of our poem. I hope this meets the criterion.

Oh that one particular Humpty Dumpty would fall from his wall.

I think we will see some things shattered but maybe from this something new will arise.

Hopefully a better appreciation of life and one another. If it brings us back together again it won’t all be in vain. Thank you!

Good observation: “We all sit on the wall waiting to fall.” All we need is a crisis to test those gods we thought were invincible.
I also like the expression on Humpty Dumpty’s face in the psychologist’s office.

Ha Ha, I guess in times like this we need to laugh or cry. I will go with a smile instead!
Thanks Frank.

A sad fact beautifully expressed.

Yes, very sad indeed. But as Jane said, many do bounce back without going to pieces.

I wish some of them would crack. I’d like to see their runny orange yolk spill over the pavement 🙂

Clever and topical, laced with levity; good on you. I like how you made the couplet a refrain line.

Faith is easy when times are good. It’s also practice for when the times are not so good. Your poem is honest and refreshing, Dwight.

Thank you Lisa! Yes, and all the things with thought we had under control collapse pretty quickly when something like this happens.

It is really great to read someone else’s work and perhaps only one line expresses something that turns a light on in your mind. And, it may take you in a whole different direction of thought.

I like the circularity of this poem, Dwight, and the almost-repetition. Your final couplet packs a punch!

Serious malady this virus thing Dwight!. It certainly is a wake-up call on our very existence!

I like the repetition of the first with adjustment to make that final couplet. So much falls and cracks. Let’s hope something new (and better) comes from the tumbling.
(My grown older daughter still has her beloved Humpty stuffed animal friend. We could never reference the rhyme in front of him.) 😀

Ha Ha! As Jane said sometimes he lands on his feet! Hopefully that will be the case this time as well. Thank you so much!

I do love that couplet Dwight, and that the poem sits in that place of tension where nothing seems good (irrespective of any possible outcome to the contrary) you capture the feeling of the grief of forced change so well, the plight of hopelessness.

How the idols with clay feet crumple before a rider of the Apocalypse! Love the repetition of the first two lines as your closing couplet. But I especially love these:
“Invincible has no definition in our world;
We all sit on the wall waiting to fall.”

I appreciate your creative take on our current state of upheaval.
“Life in disarray lies before us
with no way of putting it back together again.”
I hope we choose to take what was good from our past and leave what wasn’t serving us.
