Through it all the animals roam freely
while humans withdraw in their dread and fear
not venturing out // where birds sing sweetly
Our furry and feathered friends worry not
going about their gatherings with cheer;
living lives daily with nary a thought.
Resigned to their fate, they’ve no ears to hear.
While superior beings listen in fear…
Newscasts shout, “Cornovirus is near!”
What makes us believe we should rule the world?
We read it on pages // good books are clear
we’re invincible // destined // brash and bold…
Perhaps, it’s now time to accept our state;
realizing we are not superior here;
and, like the animals accept our fate.
Live life with purpose making each day count.
Knowing in God we trust through every tear…
we face each tomorrow as tensions mount.
I see people racing to the store to buy up toilet paper, I notice all around me in nature is still the same. The birds sing the squirrels raid my feeder without a thought. We have a lot to learn about our place in this world and nature has many ways to help keep us in perspective.
I share the sentiments you express in your poem, Dwight. It’s time we got off of our high horses and started appreciating what nature is trying to tell us. It’s not too late to listen, but we need to get a move on.

This I believe is our wake up call that says, “Who did you say was in charge…?”

Interesting that you improvised with the form; a strong poem emerged. You captured the spirit of the prompt without being bound by its parameters it seems; smile.

Thank you Glenn. As you can see when it comes to poetics, I have no idea what I am doing at times. Thanks for your kind comment!

Jerry Seinfeld once said that if a space alien looked down on earth they would see a person carrying a small bag of poop, being led on a leash by a dog…

I like your poem, Dwight, even if it didn’t fit prompt perfectly 🙂 Seeing robins hop about today was reassuring as well as God’s moonset and sunrise. He doesn’t change!

great use of the prompts to convey our current frenzy … the animals are smarter than us 🙂

I think I’d like to be a squirrel until this pandemic is over. This house arrest is going to get pretty darned boring methinks!

I think we need to take care … and by that caring for others. Not sure if a squirrel cares for anyone but himself 🙂
