This beautiful Red Shouldered Hawk sat on a limb just beyond the edge of my back yard. The birds at the feeder did not seemed concerned and continued to come and go as usual. I saw him dive down after a mouse in the weeds. That is how I happened to seem him.

Winter Solstice near
Phot: Dwight L. Roth
Frank Tassone reminded us that we are coming up on the longest/shortest day of the year. This coming Saturday is the Winter Solstice in our hemisphere. Midwinter can only mean one thing… Spring is on the way! Our Haikai poem this week is to refer to midwinter.
Dwight it is phenomenal how the tree branches make an arch, with the light behind the hawk. Oh so neat and a wonderful haibun to boot.

Thank you Jade! He was back a little further and then flew up to this branch out in the open. I shot this with a 200mm lens and then cropped it even more to get it to this size. That is why the photo is a little fuzzy. Got lucky on this one! Thanks for commenting!

Yes, I rejoice on the 22nd or 23rd when we start gaining the daylight again. Where I live I get about 5.5 hours of daylight. I always feel winter solstice should be the bigger celebration…. more daylight on its way!!!
