When I go to bed at night
And my parents get ready to turn out the light
I shudder and shake like an earthquake
As fears arise and create all these fakes
Wild and awful creatures in flight
Come floating in the dark of night
Out from under my bed they snake
Rearing ugly heads to make mine ache
But, I learned the best way to make fears flee
“I usually solve problems by letting them devour me.”
When they see how sweet to the taste, I am
Their fright disappears and I fall asleep once again
Amaya at d’Verse, came up with the idea of turning Franz Kafka quotes into children’s’ stories. She gave us a few to choose from and I chose, “I usually solve problems by letting them devour me.” The ideas is to overcome fears by embracing them as part of the fun, thus taking away their power over our mind.

I write every day if I can! At times I may repost one from a year or so ago. Thanks! Glad you liked it.

I had a monster in the closet; just dust bunnies under the bed. Nice use of the prompt quote.

I like that take on Kafka’s line. I hadn’t thought of those problems being fearful and how tasty to them I might be.

Oh, those monsters under the bed, Dwight, and a novel way to get rid of them – give them what they want!

We have this song: ‘Faces in the wall paper, but not really afraid inside.’ As a child I for a while really was afraid, but it died out, luckely. Your poem hit a spot!

Thank you Peter! I remember my fear of monsters and creekings of an older house as well.

It would seem your monsters dissolve in a zen moment.

Reminds me of my childhood fear of a house thief–common in my world at the time–hiding under my bed.

Thanks Rosaliene… a fear most children go through at times!

Call me a weirdo, but I didn’t have a monster under the bed or in the closet or anything as a kid. Probably because I was up half the night reading. Shhhh, don’t tell my parents. 🙂

I dreamt once in childhood, of a snake with a lion’s head in the garden, and going out in the dark terrified me for weeks.
