I found this cicada on the driveway yesterday! He was dead as a doornail. After being in the ground for seventeen years, all the work of singing to find a mate must have been too much for him. He died in the prime of his life! Must have been a wild night!
Bursting into light
Everyone heard him singing
She loved his sweet song
The honeymoon didn’t last
Found him feet up on the drive

Frank Tassone asked us to write a Haikai poem about the cicada. I decided to write a ranga, which usually has a tongue in cheek sense of humor.

I couldn’t find a way to incorporate all those details I found into a simple haiku. You did a great job.

Thank you. I did just find that one yesterday!

You are welcome. I looked it up prior to writing, but I did the simple 5-7-5 haiku and that didn’t leave me much place to put all those details.

I think I like the haibun with the haiku so more can be said!

I find haibun confusing to write so stick with the the haiku.

Thank you.! Lady Nyo posted a group of Samauri death poems on her blog. They were very humorous Rangas. I thought a little humor would spice up the prompt!

it totally did, sometimes it can be morbid but this was light and respectful too.

Holy cow, I have not heard cicadas in several days and as soon as I read your post, I hear cicadas outside my window! What the heck!? Noisy little buggers! Lol.

It really was a prize. I don’t recall seeing a blue dragonfly before. Just a bluetail fly!

We get invaded by cicadas every 17 years or so. Although I love nature these little creatures freak me out. It seems we get millions of them. But they are incredible creatures.

It is amazing to see all the little holes in the ground and the shells on the trees.
