“Who’s that tripping…”

This is a picture of the Little Golden Book that was read to me in the early 1950s! The story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff has stayed with me all these years. The old grouchy Troll who lived under the bridge was outsmarted by the three billy goats.

Today at d’Verse, Frank asked us to write a Quadrille of 44 words using the word Troll. I immediately thought of this story from my childhood. It is one I remember enjoying over and over again, when I was four or five years old.

“Who’s tripping over my bridge,” said the Troll.
Childhood memories conjured up with great fondness
Courage and confidence displayed by small and large
Do the trolls in your life intimidate you…
Or, do you, with others, stand your ground?
Put Trolls in their place!

  1. Fun!
I had heard the story but did not remember so I did some exploring.
The wiki article gave me good background. Then I found translations of three versions here.

Thanks for the reminder of the fun stuff our parents have done for us. Hopefully our children remember fun things we did for them too, when reading, or watching YouTube videos. Smile. The poor troll was just trying to get by, like the rest of us. hehehe

    • There are a few different reproductions of this story. This was always a fun story for me. The problem with trolls is that they are just trying to get by at other people’s expense!! Thanks for your great comment, Sabio!

      • My poem is a bit of a counter to your return comment to me, Roth. And remember, “One person’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter”, terms like these tell us as much about the accuser, no?

      • Yes, perspective is everything! Philosopher Jacque Elull said we should support the revolution against the establishment until they are over thrown, then we should support the new revolution, because power corrupts and they become just like the ones they overthrew! Don’t know if this applies here or makes sense, but it is a thought.
