He was tall with brylcreemed hair
Sixteen // a new driver’s license
She was petite // a spring flower
Fourteen // hormones tingling
Her cute irresistible smile drew him.
In the shadows of the church hallway
A first kiss // never to be forgotten
…Though so long ago
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so today De asked us to write a Quadrille of 44 words that included a reference to a kiss. I wrote this one in memory of my first kiss!

Brylecream hair, now that is a flashback. I never used it, but many of my friends couldn’t do without it. Just like Fonzie.

Good for you! That is wonderful. I moved on to college and found my lasting romance there. It is now going on fifty!

I looked up quadrille and could only find its reference to square dancing – but it’s got five parts or movements, each complete in itself. Is that what the // represents? The definition also referred to “rule in squares.” Is that the shape of the poem? I want to try a quadrille. Help me understand the form, will you?

The Quadrille is a made up poetry form that originates with d’verse poetry pub. It is not in the searches. I did the same thing when I first came to d’verse. It is a poem of exactly 44 words not counting the title.

Thank you for the explanation. So, it’s just a coincidence that the // lines divided it into 5 parts?

Those are something I picked up there as well. They are to represent a pause or a break in the flow…. similar to a comma or semicolon.

Oh, so you were the brylcreemed sixteen year old who stole a kiss from that pretty young lady.
Is she the one you married?
Just curious.
