Life’s Pattern

Life’s Pattern

Our life’s a pattern of carefully laid stone

Each laid with care to show a place we owned

My life is built of corners hewn four-square

One layer on layer a box to grow to share

Young trees of green in soil dark find root

A life of sculpted stones well hewn bears fruit

New bricks in pavement of carefully laid stone

Today at d’Verse Frank asked us to write a poem in Iambic Pentameter. This is new for me so here is my attempt.  Join us at: https://dversepoets.com

  1. Nice use of iambic pentameter–terrific for your first try. Frank gave us a lot of leeway, which made for more interesting fare. Like da-dum becoming dum-da, and adding an extra word here and there. Your poem is heavy duty, but what about those of us that will be cremated, who take fire as their last lover?

    • Oh, we burn them in a foundation brick oven!! Thanks for your kind comments Glenn. I know nothing about iambic pentameter, but I can follow the detailed directions given on most of the prompts that come through. It was a fun challenge.

  2. Nicely done, Dwight, and I like the way you’ve woven a life story into stone. You’ve mastered iambic pentameter, especially in the lines:
‘Each laid with care to show a place we owned
My life is built of corners hewn four-square
One layer on layer a box to grow to share’.
I will be cremated, both my parents were, but they have small stones with their names and dates on which have been laid in a brick weave path in the crematorium – a great idea.
