Muddled News

Some call it fake news // I call it muddled

Intentional misinformation

Fed like hushpuppies to the dogs

Yapping at your heels under the table

One says this // another says that

Contradictory words // muddling

Creating the fake news proclaimed in the running

Keeping them guessing

It is Quatrille Monday at d’Verse. A poem of 44 words using the word Muddle, or a form of it, is required. Come join us at d’verse! hppt://

Having lived many years in Eastern North Carolina, we ate many delicious hushpuppies with our Pork Bar-B-Q. They are essentially deep fried corn bread. In days gone by they were made and fed to the dogs, that lived in the house with the farmers, to hush them up when they barked to be fed from the table. I thought this would be a good metaphor for the insatiable news hounds that are always barking to be fed anything salacious that can be reported on the President!

  1. Suggestion: I think the “them” at the end is less powerful than “me.” Who is “them” in this poem? I think “us” would also work. The dog with the hush puppies isn’t bothering them, is it? Hush Puppies as food or shoes are both meant to be comforts, I think. 🙂

    • Them in this poem refers to the 24 hour news meda and the tabloids. Hushpuppies were fried cornbread thrown to the dogs under the table to keep them quiet! Muddled News gets thrown to the News media to keep them guessing and confused. Nothing keeps them quiet as we all know!

  2. Great piece Dwight (we’re both thinking muddled politics). Thanks also for the explanation of the hushpuppies. One of our red-neck premiers famous for his ‘down-home’ style used to describe his press conferences as ‘feeding the chooks (chickens)’ – and that was back in the 70s. Fake news has a long history.

  3. I think that it’s the true purpose… when all is a lie, and you know it’s a lie how will you ever believe in anything except the base of emotions…. it’s the opposite of enlightenment and a tool for grabbing the power…

  4. Hah! News hounds……feed those hush puppies! And that’s the problem we’ve gotten ourselves into with 24/7 news. No matter what side you’re on politically — that insatiable need to fill the 24/7 news cycle. Feeding the news hounds to hush the puppies! 🙂
